great little camera

just finished trip to italy-around 2000 photos later,didn't want to take bulky slrs, this canon filled the bill-something of great quality and stll able to keep all the time in my pocketwhat more could you ask for? great no flash capability just overall great camera-hope it survives as well as my ae-1 have had it since 1970.Only shortcoming i could fine was some sort of cover is needed for controls on right side-asa 1 handed shooter heel of hand kept hitting everything on that side had to change menu items frequently could use a cover or some kind of lockout
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: need control lockout on back

Manual Overrides in Compact Camera

This is a great camera for the enthusiast who wants most of the flexibility of an SLR camera in a compact. I was a long time SLR user but always hated carrying around all the weight of such cameras. When digital compacts hit the market around 2001, I switched to compacts. I gave up a lot of flexibility, but the convenience was worth it. .When my digital compact broke and I saw the Cannon G12 written up in a magazine, I went for it. With the G12 you have it it either way. You can shoot in auto mode and let the camera do everything, or you can take over in any one of the manual modes. I used the manual modes extensively on a recent backpacking trip to take time exposures at night and shoot in the early morning just before dawn. It’s almost as good as an SLR
While it’s called a compact, that is a little bit of a stretch. It is a very large compact in both size and weight as compared to most point and shoot compacts.. But it’s still much smaller than an SLR.

The Power in the PowerShot line.

The PowerShot G12 puts the Power into the powershot line's name! With 30 years of experience as a photographer I've owned 3 35mm film cameras from two different manufacturers. And three digital cameras from Canon the G2 being my first digital and the Rebel XTi my only DSLR.
Out of the box my G12 was both familiar and exciting. Clean no nonsense looks, solid feel in the hand, prominent clearly labeled physical controls and shortcut buttons, and hot shoe placed high over a real viewfinder.
After about 2000 photos with my G12. From full sky shots capturing meteor showers, landscapes, vacation snapshots, to macro work of flowers and more I've had a high percentage of keepers 90+, to be honest most of the rejects happened in full manual mode. The versatility of control and camera assisted modes make the G12 a brilliant co-creator. When I find a scene I want to capture for myself or share with family and friends I know that my G12 can deliver.

G12!!!!!

Love the G 12. Fast, responsive, easy to use. Excellent picture quality. I'm more than an amateur but less than a pro. This camera allows me to take snaps as well as composed shots I will print and display.
If I were to criticize camera I'd say zoom lever is not as responsive as I'd like but then I'm used to a manual zoom. And I wish the manual was in hard copy. Be that as it may, I've spent the last several days hiking trails in Northern California taking lots of pictures. Colors are rich. Contrast range exceptional. Handling the camera a pleasure. And I keep hearing myself mutter, "This is a great camera!"

Best Camera almost perfect

I think this is the best of the best and could be a little better. The cons list are not a deal buster but really could be the final touches to a camera that just works. I shoot an extreme amount of ECU shots of products for our CGI department and this is my camera of choice.
For hand held shots my biggest problem is holding the camera. Without the bump on the front that you fingers wrap around (see the A630) it is easy to drop or else the base of your thumb hits the menu button. This seems to happen at the worst time when under a car in an odd position. Like I said not a deal buster but an aggravation when you are in a hurry.
For table tops or light table shots the door on the bottom of the camera requires removal from tripod when changing batteries or removing CF card. After setting up a shot on an extention arm this can be a real hassle and can require resetting up shot. Ugh -- an art director can spot a lighting shift and this can be a cause for a reshoot. Once a shot is set you should be able to just pop of the disk fro review.

Cons: no wrist strap, ease of holding, battery door on bottom, cf slot on bottom, menu button location

design & craftmanship excellence in a compact DSLR

After carring my 40D w/battery pack and 24-70 f2.8 in a sling bag around the Savannah, Ga. historic district all day, I knew I had to down size for travel. I considered the G-12, S95,and SX30 IS, all are great cameras. I settled on the G-12 because it"s more like a DSLR and I didn't need the long zoom of the SX30 or shirt pocket size of the S95. First impressions were the excellent build quality of the camera, buttons, and knobs. The picture quality and detail is outstanding. I have taken shots in the micro mode of butterflys hatching and close-ups of flowers. Peolpe thought they were taken with a DSLR. At a wedding, I was shooting pictures of the church in landscape mode,again great pictures. The G-12 is packed full of features and functions to meet the needs of a novice to a pro.

Continuous Drive so slow it hurts

Great for low light and landscapes and I love the ability to set everything manually in a pocket camera, but...
The continuous drive is sooo slow, this camera is totally worthless for anything that moves. This camera makes me nuts on a daily basis for this reason. Such a shame - would really be a great little camera otherwise.
