Best Camera I've Owned

This is the camera I WISH I had bought to replace the G12 I wore out. The clarity of the photos and the ease of shooting was outstanding. The view finder made this so much easier to use outside. The zoom might not have been as powerful as the Powershot SX60 HS I bought to replace it but the G12 got wonderful detail and could do distant landscapes well. Butterflies--brilliant color--and bumble bees--you could see individual hairs on their bodies. Super simple to operate as a point and shoot but SLR quality. The rotating LED captured amazing details. It is not bulky. It took five years, but I wore the camera out taking 1000s of pictures. I can't think of anything I didn't like about this product. If I wouldn't lose my copyright to the company, I would share my pix but I use them for greeting cards.

Work Horse!

I bought my Canon G12 in late 2012. Since then it has been suction-cupped against the window, on AC power, taking pictures of the river rolling by just out back past the back yard, and the critters and waterfowl that use the river as a highway. I used CHDK to program the camera to take a picture every 30 minutes. That amounts to over 17000 pictures a year for 9 years. I already have the G7X2 that will be replacing it at the start of 2022.

Great Infrared

I purchased the G12 for picture taking while hiking. The optical viewfinder a must outdoors. I put an infrared filter over the lens thinking to use the optical viewfinder. I was surprised to see the infrared image on the LCD display. I took several pictures and they came out great. (Used a photo editing program to convert the image to monochrome.) The camera even focused correctly on the longer wavelength infrared. I also have a Canon 60D. The 60D does not work with infrared.

functions well even with water droplets

We went to Niagara Falls Canada and took pictures very close to the Falls. The impact of the falls on the ground created a very thick amount of droplet mist. The camera got dampen from it but was still able to perform as it did.

Manual Overrides in Compact Camera
on August 18, 2011

This is a great camera for the enthusiast who wants most of the flexibility of an SLR camera in a compact. I was a long time SLR user but always hated carrying around all the weight of such cameras. When digital compacts hit the market around 2001, I switched to compacts. I gave up a lot of flexibility, but the convenience was worth it. .When my digital compact broke and I saw the Cannon G12 written up in a magazine, I went for it. With the G12 you have it it either way. You can shoot in auto mode and let the camera do everything, or you can take over in any one of the manual modes. I used the manual modes extensively on a recent backpacking trip to take time exposures at night and shoot in the early morning just before dawn. It’s almost as good as an SLR While it’s called a compact, that is a little bit of a stretch. It is a very large compact in both size and weight as compared to most point and shoot compacts.. But it’s still much smaller than an SLR.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, Complicated controls/menu

Great Camera

I love this camera- geat alternative to a bulky DSLR (which I have). I agree the that the colors are drabby, but activate vivd color function and problem solved. The contols near the right thumb on back of camera are easily and accidently pushed. Other than that, I have no other negative issues about this camera.
Pros: many functions, good focal length without image blur, strong flash, love the tilt screen (didn't think i would)
Cons: drabby color (can be fixed), easily hit buttons on right thumb

Excellent Purchase

This is the second Canon G series camera I have purchases. Previously I owned a G9 that I just loved. I upgraded to the G12 because the shutter was pushed in and it scratched the lens. The G12 has many improvements over the G9 they are the revolving back, the function and menu buttons are easer to use. The ability to turn off the flash and it stays off when you restart the camera. The automatic change between distant focus and closeup focus. The higher resolution video is a big improvement. It an easy to carry and borders on a professional camera. The one item I wish had been improved is more cover over the lens.
