Best: until Canon does an EVIL

I really like the G12 (had a G11) because it has a separate wheel on the front to which I can assign shutter speed. With the G11 (and my S90), I spent too much time spinning the rear wheel to select aperture and shutter speed.
My only real complaint is the metering mode will NOT stay in spot when you turn the camera off. Come on Canon, this is supposed to be a prosumer model.
Of course what I really need (besides a 5D MkIII ;-), is an EVIL (electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens/mirrorless SLR) about this size with APS-C Sensor or larger. Then I could leave my 7D behind when travelling light or just walkin' around.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: metering mode won't stay on spot

Finally bought what I really wanted

This camera is slightly bulkier than most of the compact point and shoots but turns out exquisite results under a wide range of circumstances. Build quality is especially impressive. I am more interested in something I can really grip than something I can stick in my shirt pocket.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD
Cons: instruction manual only available as an online pdf

no manual manual? not a problem!

Deciding on a new camera seems to occur more and more frequently these days but is made much easier by the number of pro reviews available on the net. What provides the max info tho is a manual in the hand. These are usually available from the support link of the maker or freelance publishers in advance of purchase. Glad to say the G12 makes me feel I'm actually taking photographs again, I must remember not to go looking for the film.
Pros: feels like a 'reel' camera
Cons: why did it take so long to arrive?

SLR alternative!

I have rarely picked up my Canon 5D MkII since buying my G12. The most notable feature is the excellent outdoor flash fill, even with just the on-board flash. I also bought a Canon 270EX external flash, which greatly extends the flash range. The battery life is excellent, don't bother with a spare battery, get an external flash instead. Some amateur features (e.g., certain modes and special effects) just clutter up the menu but do not detract from the user experience. This is a great camera capable of professional photos, could save you the price of a DSLR.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, flash fill excellent, external flash possible
Cons: amateur features could be deleted

Images good - built quality not

After 2 years:
- lens door mechanism broke
- massive dust intrusion in the optical viewfinder
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, good image quality
Cons: Flimsy Construction, 200 mm lens would be nice, main dial and rear dial to easy to turn, rease button small and wobbly, exchangebale lens ring pointless, no lens hood
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

LOVE my G12!!

I had a G7 and watched as the improved models came along. When they hit G12, I bought one and am totally pleased. I easily carry it whenever I anticipate taking snaps, as when skiing. Color/brightness when in auto modes is flawless. I was at a wedding on Labor Day 2017. The pro photographers had all Canon equipment. I chatted with one about my G12 and he acknowledged that if you travel and carry one camera, carry the G12!! He had the serious big stuff dangling around his neck and said my G12 will get snaps just as good. Get one and you'll never regret it!!!
I still own Canon FTQL/FTB SLRs and several zoom lenses using Kodachrome 25, dating back to the late '60s-'70s. Canon is the best. Forsake all others.

Solid compact camera

I purchased this G12 camera based on very good reviews, solid build and flexible features. As a an old school 35mm SLR user, I appreciate the plethora of manual control dials vs. heavy reliance on computer menus to control exposure. The exposure options are quite diverse and sophisticated, including dynamic range correction, ND filter, and various creative filters. I really wanted a camera that could accommodate more powerful external flash and external glass fiters, especially a circular polarizer. This fits the bill with Canon accessories.
Pros: metal body, nice zoom range, good image quality, raw capability, accessory options
Cons: touchy control dial, limited sensor size, small for large hands
I would recommend this to a friend!

I owned this G12 for 3 years now and it functions superbly as when it first came out of the box. I took the camera everywhere, on land, sea and along the shores. The camera is perfect in making amateur movies and photos. I highly recommend the Canon Power Shot G12
