G12, a good go to camera
on February 12, 2011

I own a larger DSLR system, but I also own a G12. It is a good camera for the day to day use, i.e. a camera that I keep in the truck, and use when I see an interesting photo situation. The camera is also small enough where I can stow it in a jacket pocket. Also, I like the low light feature, and I use it a great deal when photographing interior situations, like church functions or what have you.
In short, it is a good all around camera for the day to day carry.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: lacks a small printed user manual.

Just Love It

I shopped around quit a bit before purchasing my Canon G12 and am not dissatisfied. I wanted more than just a point and shoot cause I'm old and just learning how I can creatively use all of its settings. I take a lot of indoor pictures and people I know with really expensive DSLR's are amazed of the quality of photos I have taken. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for an excellent Point and Shoot, or a beginner like myself looking for a camera they can easily make manual adjustments and see their results.

Lacks sound memo, download bug
on March 5, 2011
Posted by: blachman
I'd love to recommend this camera as it improves a lot on my workhorse G10. However, beginning with the G11 Canon deleted the sound memo feature. I recently returned from Egypt/Israel (pre-upheaval by 1 week) and came back with 2000 photos. The sound memo is the best way to recall what each photo meant as well as historical details, etc. I transfer those memos to the descriptions when I use iPhoto. Not specific just to the G series, but the canon software cannot download large number of photos to Mac OSX 10.6.x. It hangs up and you must manually copy over the files.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, bug in downloading software
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent compact digital camera

I recently purchased the G12 after months of searching for a good compact camera. I had not considered the G12 because of cost and size. I finally looked at the G12 and a competing model. The G12 handling and ease of operation made it the best choice. In use the camera is everything I had hoped for. Image quality is excellent even at high ISO settings. I have printed black & white images shot at 1600 ISO with very good results. Noise is low enough to allow very acceptable 8x10 in prints. I always expect good daylight results and the G12 has delivered. The G12 gives me control of my images. Most compact cameras are basically auto only. I prefer to shoot in aperture preferred mode and this camera makes that simple. I have used another brand SLR & DSLR cameras for years but have used Canon digital compacts since I purchased an A10. This is not only the best compact I have used, it lets me do photography my way.
Pros: user controls camera operation, good low light performance, external controls
Cons: dial on camera back is small

G12!!!!!

Love the G 12. Fast, responsive, easy to use. Excellent picture quality. I'm more than an amateur but less than a pro. This camera allows me to take snaps as well as composed shots I will print and display.
If I were to criticize camera I'd say zoom lever is not as responsive as I'd like but then I'm used to a manual zoom. And I wish the manual was in hard copy. Be that as it may, I've spent the last several days hiking trails in Northern California taking lots of pictures. Colors are rich. Contrast range exceptional. Handling the camera a pleasure. And I keep hearing myself mutter, "This is a great camera!"
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Excellent Digital Compact (Pocket) Camera
on June 15, 2011

I bought the G12 for our Disney vacation, so I wouldn't have to carry my 7D kit all the time. It is a very good pocket camera, generally gave great images in good light and often produced quite acceptable results in low light. The images were easily viewable in slight shade even at mid-day. While not 7D capable, it was far easier to carry for 7 12+ hour days at Disney and provided for a more enjoyable experience with my gradkids.
One con to the camera is the instruction manual-downloadable and very thin!. I usually kept the camera on apeture/Raw, but sometimes put it in Auto for my wife to use. On viewing our images later, I discover the Auto setting produces JPGs and that the image size varied for unknown reasons. I think we may have somehow enabled the digital zoom or perhaps the teleconverter. It's not clear from the manual.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: poor instruction manual, unexpected varience in image size

Great compact

This is a great compact camera. I call it my mini DSLR as it has virtually all of the features of a good DSLR at about 1/3 the size. I do a lot of hiking and like to take a camera along, but a DSLR is just too bulky. I can easily put the G12 in my waist pack or on the belt and hardly notice it. And the picture quality is great. Can't imagine a DSLR being noticeably better. So a great combo of size, speed, and image quality. And the G12 feels like a little tank also ( a compliment ). Everything I wanted.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: only improvements i could see- longer telephoto, need brighter lcd
