Fantastic Image Quality

I'm a first time "G" series owner and have to say I was pretty much blown away with the outcome of the Images once they were downloaded on the computer screen. For a compact camera that produces SLR like quality photos, this was a great purchase. Love the fisheye, HDR and other scene effects. But most importantly, it is great that you are able to attach a remote shutter release and off of tripod get tack sharp images. There are a couple of things that I thought it should have came with are "printed manual", which is on the CD as PDF and a "hot shoe cover" which actually if inserted the camera flash will not fire, and also wish you could add a filter infront to protect the lens. Otherwise a fantastic camera and a great purchase. I do recommend this camera as a back up in the SLR case and for anyone who would like to learn photography, such as students.
Pros: image quality, hd video, add remote shutter release
Cons: no printed manual, no hot shoe cover

Excellent Purchase

This is the second Canon G series camera I have purchases. Previously I owned a G9 that I just loved. I upgraded to the G12 because the shutter was pushed in and it scratched the lens. The G12 has many improvements over the G9 they are the revolving back, the function and menu buttons are easer to use. The ability to turn off the flash and it stays off when you restart the camera. The automatic change between distant focus and closeup focus. The higher resolution video is a big improvement. It an easy to carry and borders on a professional camera.
The one item I wish had been improved is more cover over the lens.

Great for the Traveling Semi-Professional

The manual dials for picture settings are great. Much easier than going through a screen menu.
The picture quality is great if you know the right settings to use. Takes great pictures without flash, even in low light.
The screen and pictures are crisp and clear videos turn out well.
The camera is much more compact than a SLR so it makes a good traveling camera for those un-expected picture moments.
The only thing I don't like is the colors are muted and drab. The only way I can get vivid colors in my photos is by using the "vivid" option.
Pros: compact, manual dials, crisp pictures and display, great low light photos
Cons: muted photo colors
I would recommend this to a friend!
