This camera is fantastic! The effects are just amazing... I can't believe we get all this for the price. I am so glad we didn't go out & spend hundreds more on an SLR. We were just married this past summer and I'm realizing that the effects my photographer used on our pictures are things that we can do at home now. Wish we would have known that before we spent thousands on a professional. I wouldn't call it easy... you definitely need to spend some time experimenting and getting to know the effects, but it's well worth it for the amazing, art-like creations you have afterwards!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
I own a Canon DSLR, but wanted a compact camera for when the DSLR is too much, and for my husband, who is too afraid to use my camera. As a previous owner of a G-Series camera, I knew the quality images this camera produces. And the G12 exceeds my expectations. Works great in auto, as well as using the manual modes. Looking forward to some great photos from this camera.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, easy to use
I've shot about 200 pics so far, and am delighted with the results (can't comment on battery life yet, but shooting in cold weather drained it quickly). I generally keep the camera in Program mode and the ISO below 400 (given the size of the chip and the laws of physics, noise is unavoidable in low light at higher ISOs), shoot without flash most of the time, and am amazed at the quality of the pictures under low-light conditions.
I do hope that Canon listens to us concerning the manual, however. I applaud their conservation efforts, but agree that it's unconscionable that a camera so complex would not come with a pocket-size manual. Please rectify this -- it's the only blot on an otherwise first-rate product.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: no printed manual, could use a wrist strap as well as the neck strap
The camera is terrific - a great followup to my G7-EXCEPT: (Note the G7 furnished a manual) It is unnacceptable that the G12 is delivered without a pocketsize bound printed Users' Manual, which can be carried and read at leisure anywhere, or used in the field when away from a PC/MAC or laptop + furnished disk. Offering to print and mail the pages is a poor recovery to a really bad business decision - as is obligating the customer to print his own. The CD .pdf manual is a good idea, but BOTH should be delivered with a camera of this complexity and quality. I hope Canon choses to print such a manual, in the size and format of the G7's, and mails one to each registered G12 owner - as well as include one in all future new-in-box product packages. No Manual = Bad Move!!!
I like the excellent still image quality. But it's video function is too poor, too poor. How can you shoot the video without the zoom and auto focus function???
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, easy to use
Canon you did it again. At last a camera that does it all for the most part and then some specialty stuff. I am impressed by it intuitiveness. You even publish a manual that gets me shooting within 5-10 minutes of opening the box. I’m one that likes to get creative with my pictures and it allows me to do that and then I if choose I can let the camera do the work for me. I can hardly wait play with the camera underwater! Thanks for an awesome product.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
i think this is without a doubt an excellent camera. i was fortunate to be one of the first people to own the G12. this camera is all about convenience over perfection. i practically carry it EVERYWHERE i go. i'm very glad the decreased the mega pixel from the previous version G11, as it's now more sensitive to light, and performs better quality images due to the sensor size combination with MP.
However, i am not very happy with the video mode, as you find yourself limited on not being able to manually control the iris nor focus or zoom out while recording video.. YES, if you zoom in while filming you can NOT zoom back out. Though, the good thing that now video is HD: 720x1280 and shoots in true 24p.
I would have loved to have 24mm lens rather than 28mm, i would have loved to be able to shoot @ F/ 2.0 rather than F/2.8 and I would love to see the Canon G13 incorporate a slow motion up to 60 fps video recording.
in all fairness, the high lever iso sensitivity is good, and compared to other cameras in its line, this one might be the best in cleanness of noise.
Great camera overall.
Pros: high quality images, easy to use functionality for still mode, multiple aspect ratios, 16:9 video format.
Cons: no manual espouse in video mode, not very fast lens f/2.8
I love this camera- geat alternative to a bulky DSLR (which I have). I agree the that the colors are drabby, but activate vivd color function and problem solved. The contols near the right thumb on back of camera are easily and accidently pushed. Other than that, I have no other negative issues about this camera.
Pros: many functions, good focal length without image blur, strong flash, love the tilt screen (didn't think i would)
Cons: drabby color (can be fixed), easily hit buttons on right thumb
