A Real Compact Camera
on February 9, 2011

G11 comments applicable to the G11/G12. The G11 is an excellent compact camera with a rugged frame. It generally gets good automatic settings and surprisingly focuses on objects near the lens, less than 1/2 inch. I suggest seeking out the aftermarket books for techniques and hidden features. The battery compartment has a cool safety latch to prevent inadvertent removal. The neck strap is an issue - best described as not user friendly; awkward feel, tangles, packs poorly in my camera case. A major firmware improvement would include the ability to use the G11 upside down for left handed use. Just flip the screen text information and image to read upright automatically as sensed by position or a menu choice . This would be extremely useful for pictures of plant machinery when accessible with only the left arm (or for the handicapped). A minor improvement would be to allow in Auto Mode the choice to use MF, manual focus.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable

BEST P&S

REALLY LIKE THIS (G12) P&S CAMERA. TWO ITEMS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED; 1. LOCATION OF *(AE LOCK) BUTTON. MOVE FROM EXISTING LOCATION TO TOP NEXT TO ON/OFF BUTTON, BECAUSE WHEN I HOLD CAMERA MY THUMB HITS, PUSHES IT! I KNOW THE CAMERA IS SMALL AND FREE SPACE SO NON-EXISTING BUT....... 2. ENCLUDE A REAL OWNERS MANUAL, WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO BUY AN ADDITIONAL BOOK SO I MAY REFER TO OPERATIONS? THE COMPUTER VERSON IS FINE IF I AM IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER!!! OTHER THAN THOSE TWO NIT-PICKEN ITEMS, "I REALY LOVE THIS LITTLE CAMERA"!!!!!!!! ONE MORE THING, IF CANON COULD SHOW THE CAMERA FUNCTIONS IN THE VIEW FINDER LIKE A DSLR, WHOW WHAT CAMERA IT WOULD BE!!!!!!!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: no owners manual
I would recommend this to a friend!

doesn't shoot RAW B&W
on May 31, 2011

this is a good compact camera with lots of features. but i'm puzzled as to why it isn't able to shoot B&W in RAW format. this camera is supposed to pack DSLR capabilities in a compact size. it shoots HD in B&W but not RAW. yes, you can convert it in DPP but, that's not the point nor was i sold on. there's a lot of bells and whistles on this rig but not being able to shoot B&W RAW and seeing what it looks like on the LCD while out shooting is pretty lame. and pretty much a deal braker for me.
other than that, it's a great compact camera with a solid feel and a great look. the flip out LCD that can rotate in almost any angle. has wink technology where you wink at the camera and it will take your picture. decent flash output with hot-shoe for speedlites. decent low light performance.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, durable, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, no dedicated video button, no b&w raw

G12 CAMERA REVIEW
on July 12, 2013

I HAVE MY CAMERA SINCE DECEMBER 17, 2010. I NOTICED THAT I ALWAYS HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS, I THOUGH IT WAS ME. THEN ON AND OFF, SINCE THE BEGINNING, I HAD A BLANK SCREEN BUT AFTER FEW SECONDS IT WORKED NO PROBLEM. THEN ONE DAY IN MAY IT JUST STOP WORKING THE SCREEN WENT BLANK AND THE FEW TIMES IT WORKED IT GAVE ME A DISTORTED IMAGE! MY CAMERA NEVE EVER HAD A FALL. FOR THE PRICE VERY DISAPPOINTED. I WILL LOOK FOR ANOTHER BRAND NAME.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A wise choice

Have just decided to purchase this G12 from canon 2 days before my trip to Europe instead of carrying my Canon 400D with me. And It's a wise decision of me. G12 turned out to be a really good camera in performance. Compact size with good performance is its best point, beside that, if you are me, an semi-amateur, G12 automatic will be the good choice. The "not good" from g12 is when you shot photo in a snowy weather. It cannot focus very well. Beside that, battery display is a problem with g12 too, battery life is good but it's full all the time I used and when it is low, it turn to be nearly low signal and after just turn it off for 10 seconds and turn on again, it's full battery but then 10 minus continuously taking picture, it's out of energy totally. However, in fact, this is only after 1 morning full of hard shooting photo and I changed the battery in the early afternoon. Now, I gave my canon 400D to my dad and I just use this g12. The price is a little bit high. At this price, I would like Canon to add a case with the camera
Pros: good performance, small size esy to carry, easy to use
Cons: confused battery display
I would recommend this to a friend!
