Full Disclosure: Coast provided me this XP9R in order for me to test it out. But, everything I will talk about here is my own opinion and I'm not going to hold back any punches.
Coast Portland was not given copy approval nor any editorial input in this review. That means, they're reading this review for the first time along side you.
These are the topics I will cover. Skip to whatever corresponding number in order to read about that specific topic and find what you are looking for.

10) Charge Time/Battery Satistics
11) Battery Level Indicator
12) Holdster

14) Final Thoughts
The individual topics begin here:
1) What I Don't Like:
• I dislike the button. I've been spoiled with the low travel high positive tactile buttons of the XP11r and XP18r. Instead of going with the same style button, the XP9r has gone with a generic, stiff, mushy, clicky style button that takes much more force to actuate. I definetly prefer the button on the XP11r.
• There is no charging port built into the light itself. You must remove the battery from the light in order to charge it.
• Another omission is the battery level indicator.
• I wish the battery Included was higher capacity. A comparable cell (Nitecore NL1834R) is 3400 mah compared to 2600 mah for the Coast. Although, the Nitecore cell uses Micro-USB
• The battery charges too slowly when using the built-in USB-C port
2) Why I'd Recomend The XP11r Instead:
• The XP11r is not that much larger than the XP9r. Although, some may argue the slightly smaller size of the XP9r is worth it
• It has a battery level indicator
• A better button
• 4 modes instead of 3
• A max output of 2100 lumens compared to only 1000 lumens
• A USB-C port built into the light. Meaning there is no need to remove the battery from the light to charge it
• Nearly double the runtime when both running at 1000 lumens
• Can also run on three AAA alkiline batteries via the included adaptor
• With so many advantages, and only costing an extra $20, the XP11r truly is the pinnacle of the XP series of lights
3) Build Quality:
• The light feels very premium. It has some heft to it and feels rock solid in the hand
• It is entirly made of high strength anodized aluminum
• The handle has no knurling, but instead has a raised square grid pattern (kind of like a chocolate bar)
• The tail cap unscrews in order to remove the battery and has a large jut out for a wrist strap which also acts as roll away preventor. You are able to attach a rather thick wrist strap
• The button is a high travel, stiff, mushy, high positive tactile button with a rubber cap over it
4) Weather Rating:
• Rated IP54 dust resistant and weather proof
5) Weight:
• 5.6 oz (160 grams). That's about the weight of 29 United States Quarters
6) Focusing Mechanism:
• This light has Coast's Pure Beam focusing optic which gives you the choice of a perfectly smooth flood beam with no hotspot, or a Bulls-Eye beam consisting of a narrow hotspot with some spill surrounding it
• To focus the light, you twist the head clockwise to unlock the head, slide it up or down to where you want, then twist counterclockwise to re-lock the head
7) Opperation and Modes:
• The operation of the light is controlled by one button on the tail cap
• The modes go in order from medium, to high, to low
• Lightly press once for medium at 350 lumens. Let go and lightly press again for high at 1000 lumens. Let go and lightly press again for low at 67 lumens. Fully press at desired brightness to select and remain on
• There is a momentary on mode
8) Charging Port:
• No charging port built into the light itself. Instead, there is a USB-C charging port built into the battery
9) Battery and Charging:
• The light uses a Coast lithium-ion Zithion-X ZX850 18650 battery. It has a built-in USB-C charging port and a charging indicator on the top of the battery
• A solid red light indicates charging and a solid green light indicates the battery is fully charged
• The cell is a standard 18650 battery. Meaning, any protected 18650 cell will work in this light
• Flat top non-protected cells will also work as there are springs on both ends of the light
10) Charge Time/Battery Satistics:
• There is a significant difference in charge time when using a dedicated charger compared to the built-in USB-C port. The battery was tested from completely dead
Rated Capacity: 2600 mah Tested Capacity: 2800 mah
• Coast makes a holdster that works for this light (sold separately). It is the Coast S30 sheath
13) What's Included:
• Coast XP9R
• Coast Zithion-X Lithium-ion battery
• Charging cable. It is USB-C on one end, and USB-C and a full-size USB A on the other end
14) Final Thoughts:
Overall, I like it; but I'd still recommend spending a bit extra and getting the much better XP11r. its cost isn't far off from the XP11r nor is its size that much smaller. With double the brightness and packed with every bell and whistle you can ask for, the XP11r is undoubtedly the better value. I'd only recommend the XP9r to those who already have a collection of 18650 batteries. Paired with its small size and rugged build, it is a solid choice; but, if you are looking to get a great flashlight and don't have a pre-existing collection of batteries or are simply looking for the pinnacle of flashlights offered by Coast, stick with the XP11r. You won't be disappointed.

Just wanted to do a review on my new flashlight the Coast XP9R. Here are a few things that I love about it. It is rechargeable, has a slide focus, and fits perfect in my hand at about 5 inches long. It has a high, medium, and low beam. Click it on and it starts on medium. Click it 2 more times and it goes to high, and 2 more times to get to low. It is very bright on high which is 1000 lumens. You won't have a problem seeing anything. It is one of my favorites. Don't hesitate on buying one. It won't disappoint.

I will tell you it came in today I opened the box and it was packaged very well and very professional looking in the box. I picked up the light and right out of the box it was charged and felt very good in your hand. Four hours later my neighbor called and had shot a deer and needed help looking for it. I grabbed the XP9R the light was awesome! Short enough to put in your pocket and light enough to carry everyday! We searched in head tall grass and open field, this is where the light was golden it’s Focusing head was awesome lower setting in the tall grass and spot focus for the open field. Once the deer was found my neighbor wanted to see the light and had the same impression of the light I did. Ok here are the cons.. The tail cap power switch would be great for tactical use but I am not a fan. The recharging battery must be removed to charge it’s not a deal breaker but I find having to charge in the field the tail cap could be lost. Once again not a deal breaker. I will be reviewing this light at a later date but from what I have seen so far this light is overall awesome!

Not worth the money ! LED melted after a few weeks! Website showed charger plugging in to the light, it did not! Had to remove battery to charge! Coast did send me a new crappie light to replace it but , now they blow up my email with junk!

I received the XP9R a few days ago and I am loving it! It feels comfortable in your hands, it has a high quality feel to it, it is extremely bright, and it is rechargable! I used it for a few hours at night unloading and loading equipment out of my truck and I was happy with the amount of lighting I was receiving! I also like how it has 3 features of low, medium, and high. The XP9R is a must have for your vehicle or tool box! You can EDC it however, I would recommend a flashlight holster. The battery is charged with a USB-C cable which is great because I have many of them! I can charge the battery at home or in my truck. I'm excited to continue to use the XP9R and I am confident it will pass the test of time.

I have large meat hooks that appreciate the large grip texture. After years of working as a mechanic and hot cold they don't have the feeling they used to. And compared to my fenix pd35 2nd gen the battery life is more agreeable. I like the battery life indicator as a reference but prefer the separate selector switch on the fenix. Long and short of it feels good functions well and time will tell if it holds up. Had the fenix and it's 18650 batteries for three years daily use and had no issues until the button finally wore through from use. Hope this is a good replacement.

My Favorite Flashlight

I recently received the XP9R flashlight, and already it is one of my favorite lights. First off, it is a medium size light, but it has a rugged feel. I like the weight, and it gives the impression that it will last a long time. The lanyard attachment stops the light from rolling off surfaces - simple, but effective. And I like the fact that the rechargeable Zithion-X battery accepts a USB-C charger cord - no fumbling trying to plug the cord in, and no separate charger necessary. Additionally, the slide focus is simple to operate, and will lock in any position. The only thing that I can think of that would improve this light is a battery indicator light, showing how much charge remains. But I have no idea what kind of space and cost that feature would require. Overall it is a great light, and I will be using it for years to come.
