For careful consideration

First, I'd like to say this is a great display model of the Red 5 X Wing. A lot of nice details like the hexagonal shaping of the hull and printed windscreen. Some design choices have yielded unfortunate structural compromises that limit the durability of the overall model. That said, anytime so many Lego pieces are used to create something, multiple points of failure are introduced as a result. Your inner kid might want to swoosh it around, but you’ll probably only do so for a moment or two. Given the size of the ship, it’s quite awkward to handle. In hand, it does feel a bit fragile, but not extremely so (as some would have you think). It would be nice if Lego introduced an X-Wing (among many other ships) aimed at adult collectors that relied on less pieces while achieving a high degree of accuracy and detail. There’s simply too much of a gap between play-scale and UCS sets, in terms of both size and price. As a fan of both Lego and Star Wars, I’m glad I bought the ship.

First UCS Disappointment
on May 15, 2023

I was so excited to close out the trio of Rebel starships from the original Lucasarts X-wing game. Unfortunately the whole set feels cheap and poorly thought out. UCS kits aren't play kits, but the opening mechanism is totally inadequate for the weight of the wings. Two tiny rubber bands hold the wings open and they're just not cutting it. The attached Photo is at maximum opening.
The whole build seems poorly thought out. Wings should have been assembled opposite each other to balance the mechanism to avoid overstretching those rubber bands. Right now instructions have you build the bottom wings first. I was worried the flimsy rubber bands would snap.
If you pick up the model everything shakes and bounces and feels like it's going to fall apart.
Considering how awesome the Y-wing and A-wing kits were I'm pretty disappointed.

Huge Let Down

I really thought this set was going to be amazing, but I was so wrong. I overlooked the ship's nose not being the correct color. During the build I was plague with missing pieces, flimsy panels falling off, and a really flimsy cheap base that doesn't hold together. The panels on the side are held in place with only a few stubs making them fall off alot, the stand is flimsy, and this x-wing seems like a money grab. I would 100% avoid buying this set.

Luke, use the super glue...

I know the nice Lego lady that responds to these is not going to like this, but having been building the lower end Lego's for my kids for years, and the expensive Technic and Star Wars ones for me, this is far from the first UCS kit I've done. Overall, it's a great kit. Great design, fun and quick to build, not too repetitive, and the final product is really very nice to behold. And quite solid.
But there's a caveat. When building, I noticed that the engineering for the side panels was severely lacking. I could see from experience that this was going to be a "fall apart and put it together again" nightmare. So I bypassed the frustration and used some Locktite superglue, just on the connect pieces on the unit itself, and on the side panels. Once securely fashioned, the side panels easily snapped on, and held on, without any issue, making the build quite the fun one. I can see that people complained about this, and I understand why the Lego engineers did what they did. In order to accomplish the nice lines of the model, I can see that they had little choice in using the attachment method that they did. It doesn't work, but a little dab here and there, and it's great. Really, a beautiful kit. I know it's anathema to see the word "glue" on a Lego anything, but in this case, I found it necessary. To add insult to injury, I also did the same with the large UCS AT AT, whose bottom members sometimes did not agree to hold on tight.
It's a good kit, and when finished, it really looks nice. A nice complement to my Star Wars collection, which, to my wife's dismay, goes back to the very early and very large versions of the Super Star Destroyer and Imperial Star Destroyer, and most every large set from there forwards. Hopefully, I'll get to keep all my Lego's in the divorce.
Buy it. This one is worth it.

More nitpicks than complaints

This is a beautifully detailed display piece that is slightly diminished by some questionable design decisions. As others have noted, the 'S-Foil' mechanism is not strong enough to keep the wings securely closed, and can come untracked too easily. I didn't have any problems with the nose sections, but the side panels around the wings pop off too easily, and they're hard to reattach properly with the wings installed. I also had problems with the bottom stops on the display stand popping off due to the weight of the ship. For now I've improvised an elastic solution so I don't have to break out the Kraggle. :) Once assembled and displayed, it's a sight to behold!

Looks great, but that's about it.

I was very happy when I finished building. It looks great and it'll sit on my shelf, but like a lot of reviews I have an issue with the wings and the gap. I'm not sure what could have been done to fix it, so I'm not going to judge on that.
The reason it'll sit on my self is I'm afraid to touch it ever again. I thought I did something wrong or missed a step, so I rebuilt it once. However that didn't help. It's not very stable and things pop off SUPER easy.
Plus I have 3 parts that are highly visible that are scratched, and spending that much money on something and getting scratched pieces really hurts.
Overall it looks great. I'm debating if I should super glue some of the parts to make it more stable. Which is a bummer if I ever want to rebuild it.
Two of the three parts that are scratched are unavailable to get replacements. I'm assuming its because a lot of people had the same issue. I've never had a scratched part issue so I'm guessing this is a one time event.

Better than expected

I do not know why there are so many negative reviews. I found it a great build. I have many of the UCS models and love this one. I didn't find it flimsy, but I don't play with it. I really cannot recommend it for play, it will fall apart. Aside from that, I love it displayed. Next comes lights!

Flimsy and missing pieces

Cool set and bigger than I thought but one piece was damaged and I was also missing another piece, now I have to wait 7-10 business days to finish it. For a set this expensive there should be a little better quality control. Do better Lego!
