Horrible Design

This is the first set I've ever just flat out quit building. As many have mentioned, the side plates are held on just by a few studs and fall off with even the slightest nudge. Putting the nose on is an exercise in futility, and after a chunk of the front part of the set fell apart while trying to put it on, I just gave up on it and will move on to another set. I just hope this isn't indicative of where Lego designs are going.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Poor design

I was very excited about getting a larger X-Wing. But, so disappointed on how it is designed. It would have been so easy to use a couple technics style pieces to hold the side plates and wings on. It would have been usable. Grandkids could have played with it. Instead they chose little snap on pieces that don’t hold. And, no, I didn’t error in assembly. Those little bumps just don’t hold. They are not high enough and where you place is not deep enough. Not good.
I wish I could get my money back. And that has never happened before.
To all reading, either save your money and don’t buy it, or do your own placements of bricks from other sets you have and do it your own way.
Sorry Lego people.

Worth the money

I can see that most of the reviews so far don’t make justice to this set. It’s a fun built, not repetitive and with clever building techniques and new elements. I’m not a huge Star Wars fan and this is my first UCS so I don’t have means to compare with previous versions of X-Wings. However, I can say I’m happy with the set, it kept me busy for a while. I love space ships and Lego so it checks both requirements!
As down sides I would mention the use of few stickers, a missing piece and a design flaw at the support base, which shouldn’t be expected in a set like that.
The comments from others about panels falling apart do not make sense at all, if you are familiar with Lego everything fits perfectly, so don’t take the bad reviews too seriously, many people may not have the patience or skills to put it together but this is not Lego’s fault!

Nice display piece, but not the best UCS set

Alright where to begin here.
I got this set to round out the UCS A Wing, Snow Speeder, and Y Wings in my collection. However this UCS set does not live up to the quality of those sets.
First off, I can appreciate the printed pieces - however, as others have noted, they were poorly packaged and had some scratches. Not a major deal breaker for me, but annoying for the cost.
Secondly, there's a lot of panels that aren't secured very well. This is most apparent with the side panels near the wings and on the nose. Not a major issue for a display piece, but again, annoying.
Third, the wing design seemed poorly thought out. When open, they look great. However, closing the wings makes them sag.
Lastly, and by far the most annoying for me. The design of the base is terrible. In previous UCS sets, it was nice to be able to display at different angles. This set limits those options. Not to mention, there's only a couple small parts that hold the ship on the stand. Frequently when adjusting the set these parts would come off. It's quite frustrating when other sets don't have this issue (UCS A Wing, Snow Speeder, Star Destroyer, Slave 1, Y Wing, etc.)
Overall though, I did enjoy building the set, and it does look nice on the shelf. However, for the price the quality doesn't meet the standards set by other UCS sets.

Must see in person

I’m much more satisfied with this set than I expected to be. Most of the complaints seem to be based around the nature of the build and structural integrity. I didn’t personally come across these frustrations. However, I think part of that for me was expectations. Most of the UCS sets are relatively fragile. This is no exception.
To avoid some of the problems others have faced, focus on picking it up from the top and bottom at the rear and resting the front on your other hand.
My primary concern prior to purchase was the look of the thing. But I’m very happy with how it looks in person. I can’t explain the science behind it but I think the shapes and angles of this set play tricks on the brain when photographed and frankly even on film. It’s definitely not the most photogenic UCS set.
While building, I also found myself understanding and appreciating how difficult it is to accomplish the angles that are present on this set.
In any event, I really think most fans will dig the look of this set when it’s in front of them. If you’re on the fence and have access to a Lego store, I definitely recommend checking it out in person.

Good UCS Set, A Few Issues

This is a solid UCS set that I would recommend to any advanced LEGO builder or Star Wars fan who wants this iconic ship in their collection. It was very enjoyable and rewarding to build, it looks great on display, and includes two excellent minifigures.
The build process is very fun, with unique building techniques and very little tedious technic parts. LEGO has achieved some interesting angles, especially with the fuselage of the craft and the build for the nose which holds everything together. The wings can be a little repetitive at times, but overall I think there is enough variation and it is a fun enough build that it doesn't really get boring or frustrating.
The look of the finished model is fantastic, especially with the wings expanded in attack position. It is a massive improvement from the 2013 UCS X-Wing, especially in a couple of key areas. The main body of the X-Wing is properly angled and looks more detailed and accurate than before, the engines are much larger and more screen accurate, and the windscreen is printed this time around which makes for a much better building experience and a more seamless looking final product. The only issue I have with the look of the model is that the wings and cannons tend to droop, especially when closed. This makes for a pretty messy look and does not feel very "UCS" to look at. With the wings open, however, it looks phenomenal.
The minifigures in this set are perfect and I would not change a thing. The new flight suit Luke Skywalker has arm printing and dual molded legs, which makes all my other flight suit Luke figures look way too orange and plain in comparison. This is a perfect figure to include in a UCS set, as it is just a better and more detailed version of a figure we have already gotten in playsets. The R2-D2 minifigure is a similar story, finally adding back printing that has been missing for so long. This isn't the first set to include it, but it is not too common and it is the first one I have in my collection.
This set does have some flaws though, mainly with the stability of the model and the functionality of the opening wing feature. As I mentioned before, the wings droop and are uneven from side to side, which looks bad now and I imagine will only look worse over time. The mechanism for opening and closing the wings is very slick in concept, but in practice it only works about 60% of the time and sometimes gets stuck or doesn't close the wings all the way. This is not an issue that should be present with a pricey UCS set like this; I expect a more polished product from the LEGO Star Wars design team.
Overall I would still recommend this set and the flaws are mostly able to be overlooked. It looks phenomenal on display, the minifigures are excellent, and the build experience was a lot of fun. Definitely pick this up if you are on the fence. It is a good representation of a classic, iconic Star Wars vehicle and will fit right into almost any collection.

It's all right

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Overall, this set is okay. While I was building, the only part that I found dreary was the almost identical wings that took up four bags. Besides that, and some of the side paneling, which was also almost the same, the building experience was pretty fun. I hate to say it, but after the build, there are a lot of bad things to say about it. They falsely advertised the display plaque by editing the pictures on the website and the box. I don't know if they completely skipped over the detail or if they wanted it to look like it had just been scrubbed clean, but in the movies, the nose piece is a grey color. The windshield piece and the display plaque were both printed, which was nice, but were just thrown in the box. My windshield piece came out pretty scratched. The R2-D2 minifigure is just not the right size for the set and should be on the stand. I don't like how the stand is built to make it point up because if you're placing it on a shelf that is eye level or higher it looks bad. Also, every once in a while, I will take it off my desk and just admire it and play with it. But when I do, the two curved slope pieces on the stand tend to fall off. The side paneling is held up only by a few studs, so if you're buying it as a playset, they tend to fall off. If you can look past all that it's a really cool set.

Huge disappointment

I have been a fan of LEGO since I was just out of diapers (over 35 years ago) and a fan of Star Wars probably longer. I had never bought a UCS set before due to the cost and not having the space to display. When I saw the X-Wing I just couldn't say no. I was so excited to build and display this.
But even from the very start there were issues. Shoddy build techniques (flat plates held on by nothing but having them wedged between 2 studs? Seriosuly?) and terrible stability all over the place led to a miserable and frustrating experience. I'm afraid to even walk past it as a stiff breeze would cause the flimsy stand to give out. It looks nice enough once built ... until you actually look at and see the sagging wings and wobbly blasters.
I wish I could return it because as it is I'm going to take it apart and box it up and put it in the garage. It's just not worth the space it takes up and that's incredibly sad.
