Finally bought one of these for those tight spaces. Worked on several occasions but just recently burnt itself out. Lasted less than a year.

Good functionally but but went up in smoke

I really love DeWALT power tools and I own at least a dozen cordless tools and several corded ones. Nothing but great performance and reliability. But this right-angle drill is an exception and I am disappointed with DeWALT. While drilling holes through studs to wire my new house it overheated and went up in smoke. I liked the drill a lot until it failed, enough power for what I need and very compact. First DeWALT tool I have had fail on me.

Not for heavy duty

I had a similar experience to a few other reviewers here. On the first house I ran wire in, this thing burned up. When I was drilling 3/4 into the studs, this thing was butter. However, when I had to drill through the sill plate, it got bogged down and I began to smell burning plastic and seeing black smoke coming from the drill. It still works, but it gets piping hot after maybe 5 minutes of work. I would not recommend. If you’re trying to drill holes, pony up for a hole hog.

Bought this to access tight areas when construction cabinets and needed to reach the attachment screws for the drawer slides in a narrow cabinet. It did exactly what I needed it to do. I have used it many times since then and it always performs flawlessly.

I feel bad for the folks who had theirs burn out - recent production problem maybe? I bought mine just over a year ago. Have used it a lot with a six inch long 1” boring bit to bust through 2x's - studs and doubled up top plates - when pulling cable. Chews through everything no problem. I guess it's when it works it works well.

The only drill I use constantly.

I bought this thing almost 7 or so years ago and used it almost daily for a range of carpentry projects. This thing is so tough and durable, even taking a (ok, a few) 12 foot drop onto concrete, this thing is so tough. This has been my first Dewalt tool, and it's been so great I've ended up replacing almost all my other tools with Dewalt because of this drill.
My only complaint is they need to upgrade this to a brushless model.

I used the drill for the first time and the motor started sparking and smoking. I was drilling a 3/4 inch hole in a stud. I was not able to finish the home. The drill was returned to the store.

Patiently Waiting For An XR.....

I have used this drill for over two years as an electrician, only driving screws and occasionally using it for drilling holes in mild steel to tap threads for ground lugs. I made the fatal mistake of using it to drill three 1" holes with a holesaw in steel studs and before I was done drilling the third hole I saw a plume of smoke exit the drill and started crackling. I don't abuse my drills and I usually use heavy duty corded drills for repetitive high demand applications, so needless to say I was surprised that I toasted this thing after a few holes in some flimsy steel studs. I am a DeWalt fan and have invested heavily in the 20V/Flexvolt platform so I'm really hoping DeWalt puts some time and money into developing an XR variant that is tougher and can survive a little longer.
