When I bought this phone it was relatively up to date on OS and functionality. Samsung has not released any updates for this device beyond Android 2.1 which is now so far removed from Android capability that it is an insult.
For the most part i love my phone. I had the Galaxy S and someone stole that one so my mom bought me this one. I like that i can access certain things on my phone without unlocking the whole thing. I also think its pretty cool that i can listen to music and close the app but still let the music play and once again access that without unlocking my phone. The only thing that i dislike about my phone is when it freezes but that may perhaps be something that im doing and not the phone. I think its awesome though and i would definitely recommend this to someone else.
Freezes, sluggish, constant reboot loops... Dont buy!
Pros: Built-in speakers, Inexpensive
Cons: Poor quality, Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great phone. Still as of 2-2-12 it still beats other phones for use and overall entertainment. Friend has Droid Razr and it cannot play mkv or divx files unless 3rd party players are installed and then it is still hit or miss. Screen still blows away most competition other than newer Samsung phones (gs2). Only quibble is lack of development either from Google, Samsung, or Verizon for not formally upgrading it from 2.1 and for absolute no sdk for the ticker which was a great venture similar to the note pen. Still netflix apart it is still a great phone and will be for at least another 8 months.
Cons: no upgrade from android 2.1 unless 3rd party 2.2
I would recommend this to a friend!

I basically got this phone because of the price. I did a little research, but not quite enough. I found that this model was waaaay behind on a system (Android OS) upgrade. It shipped with Eclair (Android 2.1), and it seemed there wasn't an upgrade (Froyo) coming anytime soon, if at all. BUT! to my surprise the upgrade came out last week, at least for mine. The look and performance have definitely been upgraded. It's basically like I got a new phone. There are a few things I think that could be changed. For instance, the word dictionary cannot be edited. What I mean is, if you misspelled a word while texting it will be forever in the word list and there is no way to remove that word. Other than this and a couple other issues, I am pleased with the device. However, next time I will do a little more research. ;)
An amazing phone that is still surprising me a year after buying it. Very durable, the ticker is a very cool feature if you use it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because phones can always be improved; it does freeze once in awhile, and the software is outdated. But battery life is awesome, I never have any dropped calls, and the phone itself is great. It's small enough to fit in your pocket and not feel like a boulder, but with a large enough screen to watch movies and play games with no problem. Overall, a great phone and I highly suggest.
