The first time I used it to try it out it jammed 3 times and I had to take it apart where the bobbin is to clean it of tangled threads. Also, for 2 days I tried and could not get the automatic threader to work.

I think this would have been a great machine, unfortunately there was a defect at the factory, and it would not work out of the box. There was a problem with the buttonhole lever switch, and without this switch working, the machine will not sew, just beep.

I received the Singer Brilliance 6180 as a Christmas present 12/2011. I followed the start up directions. It wadded up thread under my fabric IMMEDIATELY. I ripped out the thread. But had the same result 4 times. I put it back in the box for 11 Months. Today I took it back out to try to make some simple gifts for Christmas. But I am having the same problem, as I expected. The number one problem is that the bobbin, which sits vertically, does not lock in place (though the directions say, "Release the latch to lock bobbin case in place.") The latch is a floppy little metal thing with no spring to cause it lock in any way. I cannot fathom how it is suppose to lock. And I assume it is responsible for the instant jamming I always have.

So Far so good. ACtually, my machine is a model 6199, not a 6180, but there is no listing for it. Anyway, The machine is tight, not very noisy- only had a couple bobbin thread jams on thin/stretch fabric. Purchased some additional feet, although not listed for this machine and they work well. Paid $149.00 @ Wally World, looks like it will be as good as most. I like that it has a front load bobbin with Class 15 steel bobbins- gives more stability. It flies through fabric- use a ruffler and cording foot with great results. We all know this price range is considered disposable, but I've gone through 3 machines in the last 5 years (except my old heavy duty White which I use for sequins & heavy fabrics...great although like driving a freight train)..The Brilliance has performed well so far- better than my comparable Brother Runway Edition, which is on it's 2nd (plastic) bobbin chase. The Singer Brilliance seems to be better built and I have high hopes, that with care and not pushing it (these are not heavy duty commercials, but neither are the high $$$ Embroidery/Quilters...you just pay so much for them you have to hae them repaired when they croak...and they always do). I am happy, and looks like it will get me through the 3-4 year with heavy sewing cycle, I'm pleased. I am a costume designer and do some Haute-Couture specialty gowns & dresses (mostly hand sewing anyway-just some seam stitching). I am pleased. The machine is actually fun to sew on- a little jitter on the long seams and zigs. Great on the decorative stitches which has far more than I'll ever use... I am happy- Good warranty on this machine too....

Nothing but trouble

I purchased this machine because of some of the features it promoted and the value it presented but when I started sewing with it, I encountered numerous problems. First of all, the thread kept bunching up on the underside of the fabric. It was awkward to have to continue getting into the bobbin case to clear up the threads everytime things bunched up. I changed to the metal bobbins that came with the machine and had fewer of those instances. Many times my material would bunch up under the pressure foot. Also when I would use a basting stitch it would gather up on me when I didn't want it to gather. The final straw was the C4 error message that appeared and this machine locked up not to be unlocked. Since this machine is only 7 months old, this is very frustrating and I am returning the machine to the place of purchase. I do not want to have to spend money to get this thing serviced. I will get my 50 year old Singer 401A serviced and not have these type of problems with it.

Disappointed

I bought the 6180 to do a lot of different projects and with the multitude of stitch options I thought it was a great choice. After using the machine only a few times, I'm ready to be finished with this machine! Thread continually knots on the underside of the fabric I'm sewing on. The "self-adjusting" presser foot is no good. When I made a hem the machine bogged down going over the side seams, not "adjusted" for the increased amount of fabric. I picked the stitches out and tried again with the same results. I have to pull the fabric hard through the machine and pray my fabric won't get stuck and that I'll get enough stitches in to do the job and it won't look like garbage. Also, my machine was making an occasional clunking noise. When it did that, I knew it had skipped another stitch. This happened no matter what thread I used, what needle I used, what settings I put the machine on, everything I tried failed. I called to get some help, they were very kind and helpful, I got told it's probably a timing issue and I could ship it (at my own expense) to the service center. There is not a service center less than two hours from my home so I'm stuck with shipping it. I'm so mad! I haven't begun to use it the way I had hoped I would be able to and it already needs to be serviced?! Returning it. Hands down.
