To be honest, I thought this model would be relatively easy to master, after years of using my much older electric model Singer, from the late 1960's. But so far, I've struggled a bit with the manual (very little detailed information about the machine) and I've managed to break 3 of the included needles. I'm not down and out, just yet. I've managed to tackle a few sample pieces of material by sewing seams and creating hems. Every now and again, I notice that the needle housing jams while in the down position, forcing me to turn the machine off (this is how the needles broke) Guess I'm going to be looking for new needles before the weekend is over.

Great beginner workhorse!

ive had this machine for ~10 years now? been using it nonstop for the last ~5 years. its really a great machine for the price. i have gotten to know it and how to ensure success for both of us. the machines quirks are that you have to hold the tails when starting to sew. also, you should be careful with knits and practice on scraps to get the tension right. i adjust the bobbin tension often and know how to change it for different fabrics. this just takes practice and time. otherwise. i have sewn leather, jeans, silk, knits, wovens, and anything in between including mesh, and sport fabrics such as ripstop nylon, and many zippers. i have made bags, pants, dresses, tops, masks, etc. It has done everything for me and i am so happy to have it as my machine. this machine is exactly enough for beginners with its semi-automatic threading, automatic buttonhole, the numerous stitches, and feet it comes with. its really great!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The SINGER - Brilliance™ 6180 Sewing Machine is a nice portable sewing machine with a small LCD window where you can see and adjust the stiches. There is a learning curve to threading the needle but once you get that, it is a breeze. I do wish the manual was printed out to show all of the different stitches as well as instructions on how to use the included feet for the machine.
The machine is quiet and easy to move around. The stiching is beautiful and easy to change from one stich to another.
I highly recommend this machine!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is one of the best sewing machine I have ever used! As their tag line says Singer is sewing made easy and omg! They are so right! They also have automatic features like automatic needle treader, automatic stitch width and length and automatic 1 step buttonholes. This just really made my sewing so easy not only it is easy to set up but it is also easy to operate. I got nothing to ask for and this is highly recommended!

Jams constantly

The machine constantly jams when sewing. I have to take the bobbin out and pull threads out of it. I get a C4 error code EVERY time I use it. So frustrating.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I purchased the Brilliance 6180 about two weeks ago and am very pleased with this little machine. Having read some of the other reviews where people have bee experiencing problems with bobbin jamming and "bird nesting" of threads, perhaps the following tips may be of some help. Please make sure that when you thread up the machine the presser foot lever is in the UP position.If you thread the machine with the presser foot down the thread will not locate in the tension spring and the machine will not be able to function correctly and the thread will not be being held in tension. Also make sure that the thread is securely located in the take up lever, as if it is not, when the needle takes the thread into the fabric, the take up lever will not be able to pull it out again and the thread will create a "birds nest" mess in the bobbin area which will jam the bobbin. When starting to sew, please pull the threads to the rear of the presser foot and GENTLY hold them as you begin to sew to prevent the threads being pulled into the bobbin area and causing it to jam. These points apply to all sewing machines whether front or top loading bobbins. I have been sewing for over 50 years!! and have various sewing machines. I got the Brilliance 6180 to take to quilting group as my very expensive machine is too heavy for me to haul about! The stitch quality on this little Brilliance is every bit as good as on my machine that cost almost £1,000 and it has plenty decorative stitches to keep me happy when not using my big machine. It has coped very well with all types of fabric. Plwase maake sure that you use the correct type of needle for the fabric and don't use cheap ones or cheap thread. It is false economy as cheap needles will shred even a good thread and cheap threads will snap and create a lot of dust and fluff. Hope these few tips help. Happy sewing!

It stitches beautifully and has many to choose from. Very easy to change stitching design. Singer has always been a brand I trust.
