I have just begun to sew. My husband and I saw this machine at Cosco and bought it because it was a Singer at a reasonable price. Also, Martha Stewart "Approved" it so I thought it would at least work! It actually works great and is easy to use!! I have sewed two projects so far, one of which required sewing through multiple layers of cotton fabric and batting. I encountered no problems as long as I paid close attention to the threading and made sure that the top thread and bobbin thread were always in the right locations and threaded as per the instructions. The instructions would be better if they had separate sections for the different languages instead of each sentence being in multiple languages on top of each other. But, the instructions are accurate and need to be read carefully in order to operate the machine properly. They really aren't very long--they just look long because of the multiple languages. I can't help thinking that some of the negative views stem from improper threading of the machine. Since the bad reviews were from experienced sewers though maybe this machine threads differently than most? I don't know because I have never owned another machine. All the different stitches are a really great feature, and they all look fabulous. This is a very good machine for the price, and I anticipate using for many years. I would have given it five stars, but I think that since I haven't tried any other machines, I didn't think it was fair to do so.

after getting used to the odd sideways thread system and the "tugging" it seems to create and the spool pin cap.....(all very foreign from my other singer models). well I find this machine to sew pretty stitches . I make t-shirt quilts and misc. home items.

I really like my new machine, and I can't wait to try all of the stitches. Having the DVD saved me a lot of headache.

I have been very disappointed with this machine and Singer as a whole. It worked at first, then started jamming occasionally and now it jams every two or three stitches. Also, I have not been impressed with their customer service. I had a Singer growing up and it worked great...hopefully I just got a dud machine that will work well once it is fixed.

For the price it's a great machine! Obviously, it's not industrial but it has handled a range of projects with different weights of fabric and I've had no problems.

Having read some of the other reviews I would like to say that the "jammimg" and "bird nesting" of the threads in the bobbin case is most likely operator error. With any machine whether computerised or not, top loading bobbin or front loading bobbin, it is most importatnt that the threads are pulled to the rear of the presser foot before commencing to sew, and that you GENTLY hold the top thread as you begin to sew to avoid it being pulled under into the bobbin as this will cause the "jamming". It is also helpful to begin sewing with the needle placed down into the fabric. Another cause of problems is if the machine is threaded up with the presser foot down. Threading MUST be done with the presser foot UP to allow the thread to pass betweeen the tension discs. If this is not done, the thread is not held under tension whilst sewing, and the machine will not be able to function correctly. Also please ensure that the thread has been located properly into the take up lever when threading the machine, as if the thread is NOT in the take up lever, the thread will bunch up in the bobbin area and make a horrible mess! I have been extremely pleased with this little machine. I purchased it to take to quilting group as my very expensive large computerised machine is far too heavy to carry about. The stitches arer well formed and have performed well on various types of fabrics. The decorative stitches have stitched out just as well as on my VERY expensive machine. If you have this machine and have encountered problems, please try the above tips but above all, please read the instruction manual.

I have been sewing since I was fourteen when I was given a Featherweight by my grandmother. I recently wanted to try my hand at something newer with multiple features so I read up on and opted for a more sophisticated Singer and the 6180 Brilliance seemed to have the right combination of stitches, speed & weight. Grandma "Featherweight" is in the closet now because the 6180 is my new champion. I read many reviews on Amazon & here and I was skeptical after I got it home but I've made dresses, done alterations and sewed through thick layers of fabric. When I got it, I read the manual then fired it up after loading a bobbin & threading the machine. I think it's important to read the manual and get the machine threaded properly. I tried out all of the stitches and wanted to make sure it would perform the way I needed otherwise I was going to go with Plan B ("Buy" a different machine). Overall, I've had no complaints and would recommend this machine to family & friends. Many thanks to Singer for helping me put miles of stitches on their machines. My only suggestion would be to separate the languages in the manual so that it reads easier. Other than that minor complaint this machine is just the upgrade that I need.
