Real workhorses!

I just bought a monochrome printer to use for letters, etc., in partnership with my Brother color printer. Both are incredibly dependable and functional. I couldn't be happier with my choice. Still, as with all printers, I wish the cartridges were longer lasting. I just had to complain about something. It's my nature! Thanks.

Out of the box this is a good looking laser printer with a modest footprint. Setup is a bit more complicated than it needs to be due to the minimal buttons and the tiny black and gray lcd screen that is difficult to read depending on the lighting and the angle you’re looking at it from. Once it’s linked up with WiFi it’s good to go though.
The biggest flaw this printer has is that it’s billed as being Apple Air Print ready, and I guess it is, but the functionality of the printer using Air Print leaves a lot to be desired. This printer is capable of printing over 20 pages a minute, but in Air Print mode it puts out a max of 2 pages a minute no matter how you tweak the settings. The only way to get it to print at capacity is to use the Brother App. The app is easy enough to use but it seems like Brother intentionally made Air Print less funcional than their app for what I can only assume is for brand loyalty reasons. Selling this as an Air Print printer while making Air Print printing so slow is either a case of bad programming or deceptive advertising / marketing. Either way, I expected more from Brother.
The only other annoying flaw I’ve encountered is the tendency for the printer to take what should be a one page print job and spread it onto two pages, with the second page consisting of one or two lines or as few as one or two characters. It seems as though that’s something that could have been taken care of in programming in order to conserve paper and ink. It’s especially frustrating because every time it has happened, the print setup didn’t show that there was going to be a second page, and even so, it should have been printed on the back of the first page since this is a duplex printer.
All in all, this is a great little printer. The print quality is crisp, and for people who have a small office or just want to print some recipes or whatnot at home this is definitely a superb value. There are some definite flaws that detract from making this a perfect printer. Brother could easily fix these problems if they wanted to though, so hopefully they will in the next model. Even with my complaints, I feel this printer should be at the top of anyone’s list who is looking for a monochrome printer for printing text. Don’t waste your money buying an inkjet printer because you think you might want to print a picture here and there. Get your pictures printed at a store which is set up for producing great photos, and use this printer for printing text. You’ll save bags of cash in all the printer cartridges you won’t have to buy, especially since pretty much all inkjet printers today have governors that limit the number of prints you can get out of a single cartridge, even when there’s still tons of ink left in them. The toner cartridges this printer uses last for hundreds of prints, they never get dry, and you don’t have to run cleaning cycles. Laser printers are hands down winners for printing text, and this is a great printer.

Makes my house lights flicker while printing

Just hooked it up. It prints well, but while printing, the lights flicker in several rooms in my house. No other appliance does that; even the toaster, which presumably draws a lot of power.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Features for a small printer
