Great saw

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My friend has this same saw and has loved it. Works as good if not better than my gas saw and a fraction of the noise! I’m selling my gas saws and will only be using these now. Starts every time, no messing around with gas or pull starting.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Works great for basic stuff

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you aren't planning on running a tree service, this chainsaw works great. Cuts through big logs and runs for a decent amount of time on a charge. You're not going to cut up an entire massive oak tree on a charge with it, but it'll get the job done eventually. I like not having to wear hearing protection while using it!
Pros: Cost-Saver, Quiet, Effective, Powerful
I would recommend this to a friend!

Definitely not as good as the smaller 18 inch 80 V
on December 11, 2025
Posted by: Dgv11
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love greenworks tools and batteries own about 20 or more including other versions of the chainsaw, such as the 18 inch 80 V, and the 24 V 12 inch. Unfortunately, the 20 inch saw is completely unacceptable, and simply does not operate properly with the typical 80 V batteries. First, it has an electronics added to it that no other saw has. This operates essentially as a governor constantly turning off your saw when it feels like the saw is working too hard. You then have to press the button restart it to continue cutting. This is not an issue with the 18” 80 V saw which has no such button and does not cut out. In addition, the 3.4 kW motor actually generates less usable power in practice than the 2.4 or 2.8kw? 18 inch saw it may be that the battery is underpowered for the higher motor but it simply just provides less performance on the 20 inch saw than the 18 inch saw so much less that it’s irritating and you can’t stand using it when you’ve used the other saw, therefore had to send this back. I’ve asked that they talked to the engineers to see if this is an undersized battery problem or a defective electronics problem with the new switch they added. Either way I don’t think anyone should buy the saw over the 18 inch you’re just paying more to get less and it doesn’t operate safely since it cuts out in the middle of a tree.
I will update my review if I hear from the engineers, and hopefully they will redesign the saw or identify a solution to make the saw work properly.

Hello Dgv11.
Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback on the 20" 80V chainsaw. We appreciate your long-term use of Greenworks tools and batteries, and your insights are valuable.
The 20" 80V model includes electronic protection designed to prevent overload and protect both the motor and battery. We understand that the frequent shutdowns requiring a manual restart can be frustrating, especially compared to the 18" 80V saw, which operates without this feature. Your observations about cutting performance and battery compatibility are important, and we recognize that the 20" saw may feel less powerful in certain conditions despite the higher motor rating.
Your feedback has been shared with our engineering team for further review. If you ever have specific questions or concerns about our products, contact Greenworks via Live chat on our website (www.greenworkstools.com), call us at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS) or refer to the FAQ ask section of the tool or ask us a question, anytime.

Auto Dies
on January 9, 2026
Posted by: Vincent123
bought mine on November 16, 2021. Now i use it and it continually just dies. The battery could be fully charged and it only works for 30 seconds or so and then cuts off. Like there is an auto shut off kicking in. So frustrating. i regret the purchase. I love my Greenworks tools- except this one.
Response from greenworkstools.comBy GreenworksJanuary 9, 2026
Hello Vincent123.
We are sorry to hear about the frustration you are experiencing with your 80V 18" Chainsaw, especially given your otherwise positive experience with Greenworks tools.
The issue you described where the unit shuts off after a short period even with a fully charged battery is not expected behavior. This can sometimes be related to battery performance, thermal or overload protection engaging, or a connection issue, all of which our support team can help troubleshoot. Please note that this chainsaw is backed by a manufacturer warranty, and our customer service team would be happy to review your situation and assist with troubleshooting or warranty support if applicable.
We encourage you to contact Greenworks Customer Success at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS) or on Live chat (www.greenworkstools.com). We appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to help resolve this so you can get back to using your equipment with confidence.

Kudos for using a normal bar and chain oil reservo
on January 17, 2026
Posted by: Butterpat Sneezeweed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Hey look, a totally normal bar and chain oil reservoir! With a normal screw-on cap and readily accessible location for quick and easy filling like every other chainsaw I have used over the past 45 years. Every chainsaw but one that is: the 80 Volt 16" Greenworks model that I bought last year (model # CS80L417). Its reservoir is at the front, underneath the chain brake lever, making it difficult to access. Instead of a normal screw-on lid it has a little flip-top and as an added "bonus" the hole underneath the flip-top is teeny tiny so you need use the smallest kitchen funnel you can find and have to fill it ever so slowly and carefully to avoid dousing the entire front of the machine with oil.

Hello Butterpat Sneezeweed.
Thank you for taking the time to detailed feedback on this product. We apologize for the frustration caused by the bar and chain oil reservoir design on your 80V 16" Chainsaw (model CS80L417). We understand how inconvenient this can be, especially for experienced users who are accustomed to more accessible, screw-cap style oil ports.
The front-mounted reservoir with a flip-top cap was designed to maintain compact form and balance while meeting safety and sealing requirements. That said, we recognize that the smaller fill opening can make refilling more difficult than expected and may lead to spills, as you described. Your comparison to traditional designs is fair, and your feedback is valuable to our product engineering team as we continue to refine usability.
In the meantime, using a narrow-tip funnel or oil bottle with a precision spout can help reduce spills during refilling. If you have concerns about the oil system or believe the cap or reservoir may not be functioning as intended, we encourage you to contact Greenworks Customer Success so we can assist further. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools page, accessible by clicking “Chat Now” in the bottom corner of your screen, Chat with a Live Agent or by calling 1-888-909-6757.
We appreciate your long-term experience with chainsaws and thank you for sharing insights that help us improve future designs.
