Hello JPO1956.
Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. It is not normal for one any of our batteries to overheat while draining, especially in a temperature-controlled environment. The battery may be warm to the touch after use in a tool but not "hot". If you are concerned that there may be something wrong with your unit, battery, or charger, please call us at 1-888-909-6757 or start a live chat via https://www.greenworkstools.com.

Overheats before charge runs out

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought a mower combo kit which uses these batteries six months ago. Battery life should be longer than 15 minutes, but mower stops working around that time. Putting the batteries on the charger doesn't do anything until they cool off. Takes about two and a half hours for them to cool down and recharge. My yard, which is less than 1/4 acre. should take one charge and 45 minutes to mow, but instead requires three charges and 8 hours to mow. So I bought more batteries and another charger.

Hello R Bits,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the run time of this battery when used in this lawn mower. It is important to recognize that the run time depends on the load acting against the unit and fluctuates depending on the height setting, the terrain, grass height, type of grass, whether you are mulching, operator technique, etc. - there are so many factors to consider. The harder the unit must work, the quicker the battery charge will drain. Similar to how the gas in a vehicle will deplete quicker when driving at higher speeds or carrying more weight.
When using your battery, you have to be aware of the ambient temperature as well as the battery temperature.
If you are working in very warm areas, try to keep the batteries cool before using them to avoid shut-down due to the battery pack overheating. Your product will shut down if the battery reaches 70°C (158°F) cell temperature.

How to keep the battery from overheating:

Do not use it in high ambient temperatures (higher than 40°C/104°F).

Do not use battery-powered tools for tasks they are not designed to perform (cutting tall grass with a battery-powered walk-behind mower requires more power).

Do not store the battery in an unsuitable, warm place like a car.

Do not leave the battery in the product (e.g. walk-behind mower) while in the sun.

I love the mower. It was a gift. BUT!!! The batteries are HORRIBLE!!!! I might be able to cut for 25 minutes (if I'm lucky), then they die.

Hello SherryD,
We are sorry to hear that you were not completely satisfied with the run time of this battery. The run time varies depending on the tool that it is being used in but also the load acting against the unit while in use. I have a 16 inch chainsaw with 2 batteries. The saw is 48 volt so it takes 2x24 volt batteries. I also have a 24 volt power washer that takes one 24 volt battery. The life of these batteries is great. They also charge really fast. Happy I purchased this brand.

Not enough charge to last

I bought a mower with two 24V batteries. Together, they only mow half of our average size suburban lawn. They also take forever to charge. The mower is great! But the batteries are very expensive and disappointing.

Hello chriscu117,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the run time of this battery when used in this lawn mower.
It is important to adjust your mowing techniques to make the most out of the battery life but it goes without saying that that the harder the unit works, the quicker the battery drains.

Here are a few mowing tips to help achieve the optimal run time.

1) When cutting thick grass, reduce walking speed to allow for a more effective cut and a proper discharge of the clippings.

2) Only mow 1/3 of the total grass length at a time - no more. For a healthy lawn, always cut off one-third or less of the total length of the grass. The average lawn should be approximately 1 1/2 to 2” (3.8 to 5 cm) long during cool months, and between 2" to 3 1/4" (5 cm to 8.3 cm) long during hot months.

3) Mow when the grass is dry. As this is an electric unit, mowing wet/damp grass is a safety issue. However, ensuring the grass is dry will also help the grass cut cleanly and discharge appropriately. Wet/damp grass carries more weight and will mostly stick to the blade/motor shaft and will not appropriately discharge or cut easily.

4) Make sure the battery is cool before use. When the battery will not be in use, we suggest storing it indoors, in a cool dry area - away from direct sunlight. Leave the charger unplugged and the battery disconnected from the charger unless it needs charging.

5) Only use the self-propelled feature when needed. Self-propelled mowers do use more battery than standard push mowers as more power is being demanded from the battery to run the blades and the wheels. *If applicable.

We hope these tips will help! If not, we would be happy to investigate to see whether your run time would be considered average; please contact us directly through chatbot on www.greenworkstools.com that will direct you to a live agent or call us at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS). We would like the opportunity to speak with you to see if we can find a solution. All we ask that you have access to the unit so that we can complete troubleshooting with you and gather necessary unit information.

Faulty From The Get Go

I brought a new 24v 2.0 battery replacement for my drill and has never worked correctly. After I gave it a full complete charge, it only runs for one or two seconds and stop working. It immediately works again when I pull the trigger but cuts off each and every time. What is the problem, did I do something wrong or should I get another battery? This makes no sense.
Pros: Convenient

Hello CriticalC,

We are sorry for your experience, the most common issue related to a unit only working for a few seconds is connection or battery charge. If the charge is full, please make sure the battery clicks into place. Intermittent function can occur when the battery has not been correctly seated into the compartment on the tool.
Hoping this suggestion will correct the issue you are experiencing, if not please contact us directly through chatbot on www.greenworkstools.com that will direct you to a live agent or call us at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS).

24 V 4Ah Rechargeable Batteries
on June 9, 2023

I have a few of these batteries since I opted to get the same voltage equipment for my lawn needs. I have had them going on three years and they normally perform well. The past two years, I would use them during the summer months for my leaf blower and string trimmer and would recharge them after use. No issues and they even held the charge after a few months of non-use. This year, not sure if it is age or lack of/non-daily use, I've had to throw out two of them. They both overheated after each use. I left both of them overnight to see if the heat would dissipate. One did but did not recharge, even when I tried different chargers. The other just continued to be warm to the touch and I just didn't feel it would be safe to keep it. I still have two 4.0Ah and two 2.0Ah that are working and am considering purchasing replacement ones for the two that I had to throw away.
