Epic 4G Hardware

The Epic 4G's software is amusing, but what about the hardware? The over-all feel of the Epic 4G (or any of the devices in the Galaxy S line) is somewhat disappointing. For such a high-end device, the high grade plastic feels almost cheap in the hand and not very durable.
On the other hand, the beautiful Gorilla Glass display is very durable and allows minimal scratches.
One of the main features of the Epic 4G that sets it aside from the rest if it's Galaxy S brothers is it's slide-out, 5 row, full QWERTY keyboard. This is one of the most beautiful and efficient keyboards on the market today, with a dedicated number row and 2 of each of Android's 4 main buttons on either side of the keyboard.
Speaking of the Android set buttons, on the bottom of the front of the device you'll notice 4 touch-sensitive buttons. Menu, Home, Back, and Search. These buttons light up when they are pressed or the screen is turned on, but when they are not back-lit, they are practically invisible.
The volume rocker on the left side of the device feels nice and responsive and easy to locate. I especially liked the sliding mechanism on the USB port located on the top of the device. It provides protection from dust or other small particles, although I would have liked to see the port on the bottom of the device rather than the top.
The Power button however was poorly located on the right side of the device. This can be somewhat confusing for smartphone users who are used to it being located on the top of the device, and it can be slightly harder to reach with some hands.
The front facing camera is decent enough, and seems to be protected under the Gorilla Glass screen. The 3MM jack is a good (now commonly standard) addition to the top of the device. A micro-HDMI port would have been nice but it is not a big deal for most people
. The 5MP back-facing camera is nice and the single LED is good for both flash or the stock flashlight application, but a protruding camera lens is a big negative as it suggests the possibility of scratching the camera's lens.
One hardware button that I like to see is a dedicated camera button, although to activate it it requires you to lock and hold the button rather than just press it, this is both a strength and as weakness considering some people may accidentally bump this button without wanting to go straight to the camera application. I would like to see this being able to be set to different actions based on the user's liking, but that's just a minor qualm.
Last but not least the speaker located on the bottom backside of the device is clear and powerful and emits great sound quality.
I own the Epic 4G myself and I would definitely definitely recommend it for anybody who is constantly messaging, listening to music, or just wants a great smartphone!

I can't Put It Down

I cannot put my new Samsung Epic Down. I love the features, the Qwerty Keyboard, and the Relaibility of Samsung. I waited patiently for my phone until it was time for my upgrade. It was well worth the wait.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight, do it all phone

I love the applications that came on the phone, as well as the downloadable ones. It has a great integritive outlook on the future of the phone industry of Samsung

Cons: freezes up and doesnt send texts all the time

The display is bright and clear, the GUI responsive and easy to navigate. Boot time is very fast. I haven't had the opportunity to tryout the 4G radio, although its 3G radio works like a champ. The device came with Android 2.1 :( so I haven't been able to tryout Skype or videochat yet. The phone feels a little shaky and especially vulnerable when slid open. Battery life is good! Hotspot capabilities work great too!
Pros: Bright display, Realistic color, Lightweight, excellent size not too big or small.
Cons: doesn't feel as durable as the moment, dificulty upgrading to froyo
I would recommend this to a friend!

I've been a Samsung customer for quite a few years now. I must say that although I go through smartphones like most people do with water, This phone has been the best thus far. All I can say is "Thank You Samsung" for this smartphoner and the Galaxy Tab.

EPIC is an UNDERSTATEMENT

I had owned a Moto Droid prior to getting my hands on this little wonder. I've been very loyal to Motorola for many generations of phones, but when the salesperson directed my eyes toward the Epic, i knew that I had found my new set. The more he talked, the more in love I fell. Very smooth feel, great layout, and very very fast.

I purchased the samsung epic 4g about a month ago and I can honestly say I don't have ANY complaints! I love all of the features! I wanted the Evo but I ran across the epic and I compared them based on what I was looking for and the Epic 4g won hands down! Thanks Samsung!
