great performance router for tech-savvy households

I've had this router for a month and a half now, and generally speaking, I'm very happy with it. I have a 300Mbps downstream cable service and was barely seeing half that rate with my old ISP-provided router. I can now consistently hit 300Mbps on the 5ghz wi-fi band (using either wi-fi 5 (802.11ac) or wi-fi 6) and also get much better 5ghz coverage at the corners of, and just outside of my house. The 2.4ghz wi-fi also extends well beyond my property line so I can use wi-fi reliably in the backyard as well. This is with the router being in my basement, in a less-than-central position.
The amount of features included with this thing is insane, if you're one who loves tinkering with networks/settings etc. this thing is for you. Dynamic DNS functionality, VPN client and server functionality, add a USB storage device to the router to share on your network, QoS configuration, remote access, the list goes on. Also, the router itself looks great (IMHO) and the RGB LEDs on the front look awesome and are customizable, but if they annoy you they can easily be turned off.
The downsides to this router I would say are the software quality; it could be better. For example in previous versions of software (firmware) on the router, an issue was introduced where if you had cable Internet with a DHCP-issued WAN IP, the router would lose connectivity to the WAN every 1-2 days and require you to restart the WAN (or reboot the router). Super annoying. It was worse with the default settings of 'aggressive mode' DHCP query frequency; changing that to 'normal mode' improved the situation but didn't quite fix it. After installing the latest firmware the issue seems to be resolved (my connection has been stable for a week now, for example). Also, Adaptive QoS seems to (or seemed to, I've not turned it back on since disabling it) play a part in the above issues so I turned it off even though I want to use it.
If you want an easy to use, works out of the box with zero issues/zero effort router, I would avoid this. If you want an incredibly customizable and high-performing network device, at a reasonable price, look no further!

I bought this 82u to work with my ax11000 as an Aimesh node, it eliminated the dead zone in my backyard(under the gazebo, since ax11000 is upstairs and the steel gazebo blocks the signal). It works very well no wifi drops when i work from gazebo, very happy with this one ax82u and ax11000 ( tried ax 56u, signal is not as good as this one).

Worst WiFi Router I have ever used - i live in an apartment and while the Connection should be awesome, i constantly have WiFi outage (mainly with my note 20 ultra). the speeds should be 45-60MBS but i get all of 5-10MBS even if there's only a single device connected. if hard-wire it runs great but if you want this for WiFi (which is the reason for it) look else where.
2/5 stars because at least it looks nice.

5 ghz stopped working

For the first year, this router worked great. Then the 5 ghz stopped working. The ASUS support tried to help me fix it and we even did a factory reset. No luck. They were willing to have their technical support team examine it and possibly replace it, but I would have to send it in and it would take about 2 weeks to get it done. In today's society, you can't go 2 weeks with no wifi in your home with kids in school and working from home. I would not recommend this product.

Great Router, watch for a problem

Great router, probably the best I have ever used, with one concern only. I needed to disable some convenience items that were enabled by default by Asus. Your mileage may vary but if you find that you lose access to the router, ( ie you can't configure options either from the Android app or even by typing the router's IP address) you need to disable the ability to do settings over WAN. Either you do that or get used to resetting constantly. This might get fixed in a firmware update. Anyway, a small issue. Otherwise it is a great router.

Best Wi-Fi 6 router ever!

When looking for the latest wireless router, make sure its compatible with AiMesh, it's definitely a purchase factor when deciding on which model, and i can confidently say with certainty, this router exceeds all my expectations, especially on my 1G/sec speeds.
I use the Apple iOS ASUS app, and its been great keeping on top of unauthorized devices, easy to block, and easy to use parental settings to keep tabs on your kids online usage.
Overall, excellent performance, looks fantastic, the only issue is the price, some people might want to wait for this model to go on sale.
If you already have it, enjoy setting it up! I sure am!

Great router!

I set the AX5400 up as the main router in my AIMesh system, with an AC5300 and AC3100. Super coverage throughout the house, including the front and back yards. All outdoor cameras and doorbells have a solid connection. Wifi6 is strong throughout the house. It's a great little router with a ton of options. No internet drops/outages after a month of running the mesh setup. I've found all of myAsus routers to be trouble free. The AsusAI app is also very easy to use and give you a lot of control from anywhere.

True upgrade from 802.11ac technology
on December 22, 2021

I've been struggling with a 802.11ac router in my house, which is about 2000 sf in two floors combined. Little did I know that with now close to 20 devices requiring connection (I was surprised when I actually counted), the AC technology was simply outdated and not designed to cope with such high demand.
As soon as I installed this, at the exact same location of the last one, the speed of all devices immediately improved.
This router, beyond the AX technology improvement (more devices and more sustained speed across all), offers much more. A few of the really useful features includes 1. Network monitoring and parental control 2. USB port to connect to a harddrive (up to 2T) and use as central file/media storage 3. Built-in firewall and life-long support of safety program 4. A very useful mobile app to monitor and control the router's almost all functions
I've done my research and compared prices. At $200, this is the best AX router you can buy right now (Dec. 2021).
