Magical!!

I wasn't sure about this set when I initially purchased it. It looked a little to mild with not a lot of pieces; however, upon finishing the build I was in love! It is beautiful. I loved how the trolley witch was included as she is so integral to the films. Great job, Lego!

Exciting and intricate build

This is one of the more interesting Harry Potter sets and I love the little details that are missing from a lot of the later sized-down sets that you see. You can take the side off the train car to interact with the minifigures or rearrange them, etc. It’s fantastic! Still in my top 3 for HP sets. Not just the build but also the experience: lots of pieces and lots of fun.

Pretty happy with this set overall, great minifigs and a decent station for the price. The train itself is pretty standard, nothing incredible and I am not a fan of the front steering wheels, too loose and you have to move a piece out of the way to allow them to turn on tracks which takes away from the appearance of the train. The bridge is very low and the train barely has clearance. Any train with a smoke stack will not be able to pass under without tweaking the build. Overall a great set for the price.

Great looking set very accurate to movies, kinda overpriced for its small size but looks great on display. Has really good play features and figures, definitely recommend if you like Harry Potter.

Hogwarts Express

I was extremely pleased to see the new release of the Hogwart's Express. I wasn't able to get one of the previous versions so I was very excited to get this new one.
This is a great set starting off with some incredible minifigures. Of course, you get the big three; Harry, Ron and Hermonie, but I really like the addition of the trolley lady, Professor Lupin and the Dementor. I think the Dementor is the best figure in the set. I really like the transparent base with the black painting. It really gives a spooky floating look to the figure.
Platform 9 3/4 is a great build and it looks fantastic. I really like how they incorporated both a muggle and wizarding world side. The printed newspapers and stickers add some great detail to the scene. I especially like how the lamps are very different on each side of the hidden door.
Building the train was straightforward but it required some attention to detail. The finished train looks really good and follows the 2-3-0 configuration of the engine from the movie. There is a hinged piece in front that allows the front wheels to be locked in place for play or released to run on a track.
I would have liked to have had at least a few track pieces included with the set. I think it would have really finished off the look of the platform. Fortunately, there is enough space to add tracks if you wish. I would have also like to have seen instructions for incorporating the new Powered UP system. Just think of the possibilities of some Hogwart's Express sound in the Lego Powered UP app.
The passenger car is a simple build but it has a good amount of detail. It includes seating for four and a spot to store the trolley. It is too narrow to move the trolley through the car with all the sides on though. Fortunately, the designers made sure the roof and one side are easy to remove for play.
A few of tiny nitpicks, there is no engineer included with the set, I suppose the train is driven by magic. I would have liked a caboose which is a rarity with Lego trains. A second car with a different scene would also be a nice feature. Perhaps an expansion set?
If you like Lego trains or Harry Potter this is a great addition to your collection.

I am writing on behalf of my 8 years old daughter

It took her about 2 hrs making this set. She then spent few days playing with it. She absolutely loves it. Every detail is perfect. We both were a bit suppressed that the lady with the trolly has grey hair, we thought she would be a little younger. My daughter found another golden frog from other set put on top of the train and they matches nicely. Can’t wait for her to start the castle.

Anything from the trolley dears?...

Having grown up with Harry and friends and the disappointing releases for the Star Wars summer line, I switched my attention to the Potter Line and what a good move it was !
The station has lots of nice features and the printed newspaper tiles are a nice touch. The train ( my first Lego one ) is impressive and is great for display. I would certainly recommend this to others.
I only have two grumbles : 1 / There is only one carriage. I apperciate cost concerns but two would make it more of an express. More annoying is that going on pick a brick not all the parts for the carriage are available online so I can't replicate a second.
2/ The minifigs... Don't get me wrong the ones in the set are great and I know the main trio is a must particularly for those whose first Potter purchase this is... BUT a generic driver would have been nice and a few students from the other houses as the line including the separate minifigs ( which I also love ) seems to be Gryffindor heavy.
I know as with any company a balance has to be struck and not every fan's want can be satisified but overall this IS a great set and well worth every penny. Personally, I can't wait for more from the wizarding world. Keep building magic for us Lego !

Magical set - just 1 thing left to do, add power!
on November 16, 2018
Posted by: Jaimzee
This is a great rendition of Hogwarts Express, here is how to motorise and light it if you're interested!
I'm pleased to say it is really easy, here are the Powerfunctions parts required:
- Battery box (88000 batteries, or 8878+45517 for mains power)
- 8884 IR Receiver
- 88002 Train Motor
- 8879 Controller
- 8870 lights + 4 Pick A Brick parts as shown (optional)
- Track!
Simply remove the wheel base from the engine tender, the black plate top of it and the fireplace from the engine.
The train motor becomes the base of the tender as shown. Re-add the 4 dark grey 2x1 bricks from the tender to the base to act as supports for the rest of the tender assembly. Also add the engine and passenger car couplings to the train motor. Place your battery box in the tender and the IR Receiver in the engine cab.
For the power, connect your IR Receiver to your battery box. Your IR Receiver has 2 ports, add the train motor's plug to one and the optional lights to the other.
You're good to go!
