Possibly the best Hogwarts Express yet!

This new rendition of the Hogwarts Express is beautiful- the red and black slick design really makes it look like the one from the film. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were musts for this set, but I appreciate the inclusion of professor Lupin, with an interesting alternate face, and I was surprised by the inclusion of the trolley witch, a new but cool figure nonetheless. The train station itself has a fun feature- going through the wall to platform 9 and 3/4. All of the stickers in the set were put to good use, and the clock piece is a nice print. The train itself is very tough, and holds all of its parts together well. The passenger seats, while slightly crammed in, were a good addition. One of my favorite parts of the set is the trolley itself. I love the chocolate frog and other treats included in it. it fits inside the passenger cabin very well. A dementor is included in the set as well, with a nice cape and ghost-like tail piece. This set is an amazing build, and can be for anybody- Harry Potter fan or not!

Great set and value for the money. I only wish the train car was big enough to fit the treat cart

Hogwarts Express!

When this came out in July, I admired it, but didn't buy it with my birthday money. My Grandmother got me this for Christmas, and It was spectacular. It has a very nice display in my room, and I couldn't be happier with this revolution in Harry Potter LEGO sets. There is one teeny-tiny detail I wish could've been included, but it wasn't. I wish there was track included. But, overall, a huge success!

Great for train enthusiasts

I am actually writing this review from the viewpoint of someone who has never read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies. I bought this set because it is a nice looking train and was not disappointed when it was finished. My son helped me build it as he really enjoys trains as well.
The minifigs look nice. I am not familiar with most characters, but most could fit in well with the City theme.
The section of Kings Cross station is really nice. Straight tracks (purchased separately) could be laid between the platforms in order to incorporate this into a railroad setup. There are nice details including the newspaper rack, the clock, and the sign indicating the station and the tracks.
The train itself is outstanding! The red and gold details are nice, and it is designed to fit on tracks. A minor manipulation of the locomotive allows it to make turns on curved track. The tender is a little short, but not too bad, and the passenger car has a nice interior with well designed seats for four minifigures and a cart. The baggage cart and snack carts are nice as well with some fun details. The side panel to access the passenger cart is appreciated.
I plan on motorizing the train and figure the easiest way to do so would be to modify the tender to incorporate the battery box and the train motor. The locomotive could house the receiver to complete the setup. Also, by using the train motor, that would free up two sets of wheels and axles to be added to the passenger car in order to make it appear more realistic.
This could very well be the first set I will buy a second copy in order to get another passenger car. I could use the parts from the second locomotive and tender to either enhance the first and/or use them to help build other custom trains. That would also help to build a larger train station, so a second set does make sense.
The value seems really good here, as you get a fairly decent sized train, a station, and several minifigures. Even if you have no idea who Harry Potter is, if you are a train fanatic, you might want to give this a hard look.

Wow! This set is magical! LEGO did an incredible job capturing the trains detail and the station's as well! The figure selection is on point (I especially like the Dementor) and the size of the train station and train itself were bigger than I expected. Its not often that you get an $80 set with so many nice figures and awesome builds. A+

Best yet!

Best HW Express yet. Hits: Big wheels, pistons, screened graphics on side (and front of boiler), nicer carriage. The Dementor is amazing. Only miss I can think of, is there are no magnetic couplers. Easily fixed if you have a few laying about.
