After three years the back plate failed to connect 24 vac to the thermostat, After changing the back plate the thermostat performed properly. The first indication was when programming a wireless sensor the add device message was that 24 volts were needed. In addition the existing sensor did not provide any light on the unit, after new batteries were installed. A new sensor had to be entered. I suggest a more robust circuit to resist damage from potential surges on the 24 volt circuit. I would like to send the damaged parts back for research and improvement and possible replacement. ( That is what I do with my work.)

Uses more energy than non-programmable thermostat

This is our first heating season in our house, equipped with a heat pump and a Honeywell TH8320R1003 thermostat, professionally installed. When the heat comes on in the morning, it “always” uses Auxiliary Heat, which draws 5 times as much current as regular heat. By “always”, I mean every single day. As others note, there doesn't seem to be a decent manual or support article for this thermostat. We are finding that our heating actually uses less energy in a day if we don’t program the thermostat – if it stays at the same temperature all the time, so Aux Heat isn’t needed. A programmable thermostat is supposed to save energy. This one wastes it. I'm hoping Honeywell will either prove me a fool, by offering a simple way to keep Aux Heat from coming on, or recommend a more suitable thermostat.

Yep, it's a thermostat

It's a programmable thermostat... It has vacation mode... Supports control of a humidifier. Cool. Here are two things my unit does not do: 1) does not automatically switch between heat and cool modes. The manual says some units don't have this feature. Phooey! Already, the temp programming of this unit consists of specifying a desired low/high temp range for each time period so it's reasonable to expect it would switch between heat and cool. In 2020, there's no excuse. Step up your game, Honeywell. 2) This unit is a "learning" device that learns how long it takes to heat/cool the house. This means it records the time and duration of the cycles over a period of days/weeks in order to calculate. This unit does not give the owner access to this information; this is useful information... and it's information provided by competitors (like Goggle's Nest).

Hi, the thermostat does have the auto changeover feature which will allow for switching modes automatically. Once your thermostat has been connected four two months to your account, you'll begin receiving energy reports. If you have more questions on any of this information, please visit the Support Center link at the top of the page for ways to get in touch. -Jay

Works great as a thermostat but can't take advantage of the wi-fi options because it keeps dropping and now won't connect at all.

Loses WiFi connection often

We had a new heat pump installed four days ago. This thermostat was installed by them as part of our purchase of the heat pump. We had the choice of getting the thermostat by itself, or getting it with RedLINK. We chose RedLINK because we thought it would be convenient to use our phones, or other devices, to control the temperature or change the schedule. I’m giving it two stars because when it works, it works fine. However, the thermostat has lost WiFi connection at least once every day since it was installed. Before someone gets the idea that we have a poor connection, or that the thermostat is far away from our router, we do not, and it is not. Our WiFi connection is very strong, and we never have issues with any other devices in the house. The thermostat is 15 feet away from the router, which has the RedLINK connected to it even closer to the thermostat. The RedLINK loses it’s connection, which causes an issue with the thermostat that we can’t live with. When it loses its connection, it automatically goes into recovery mode and sets the temperature to 75 degrees. Where we live, this would be a giant electric bill in the summer when we need the air conditioning the most. Luckily, I’m working from home, and can fix this by resetting the RedLINK when this happens. I worry, though, that if we aren’t home, this could happen and have our air conditioning running constantly until we’re back home to fix it. As soon as we can afford it, we’re replacing this with a smart thermostat that will work consistently.

Everything was fine with Honeywell controlling my thermostat until I changed my internet service provider. You would think the settings on the thermostat would continue regardless of whether you have internet access or not. NOPE, everything shut down when I switched the ISP, you can’t just set the thermostat to ignore internet connection and set it manually. I did this on a Friday and couldn’t get help until the following Monday, cold weekend, no thermostat. I’m changing my thermostat to an old analog with a mercury switch.
