Still a Nikonian

I am a professional photographer, and I was toying with the idea of switching to Sony. My 35mm career started in 1978 with Nikon F2 and then I moved to Minolta XK and back to Nikon I have over 50 AI lenses that work perfectly well with my 5 DSLR so I begin migrating to Nikon Z about a 3 year ago but I was not really pleased with the need to buy new lenses when I have a lot of them, that still work perfectly well. I attended a Sony seminar and I was allow to play with few cameras and lenses in a very professional setting with lights and models, I was quite please with the outcome so I decided to buy the Alpha 7 ii, which has build a good reputation and will not break the bank, so I took my new Sony to London for a personal trip, and out of 217 files I shot in that trip 6 came with this disturbing noise, that iwas a first for me, I always had travel with my D7500 just to save in weight and never in 6 years have to delete a single picture because the camera.

Just bought this camera and it is performing beyond my expectations!
Bought a lens adapter and my Sigma SA mount lenses are performing perfectly with the Sony camera.

I am still getting used to the mirrorless camera idea. And it still feels small to me. That said, it is why I bought it. I shoot a lot from a mountain bike and need to travel light. When I want a full feel camera I use the add on vertical position two battery holder. With it the camera feels like a solid pro camera. I am a retired pro shooter and have traveled all over the world carrying heavy 4x5 and RB67 equipment. This is nothing like that.

Works great except 1 fatal flaw: AF inconsistency

I really want to like this camera. In addition to the camera and kit lens, I also have the 55mm F/1.8, 16-35mm F/4, and 70-200mm F/4 lenses. I like the color and contrast of these lenses. The camera is light and has a lot of useful features. However, there is one fatal flaw: the auto focus is inconsistent and inaccurate at times.
I have contacted Sony support and they escalated the issue to Level II support. A few days later, I received a phone call from them at 7am in the morning and left me a voice mail. He asked me to write down my issues in email and sent to them. So I did. But I still have not heard back from them.
Let me state my AF issue here. Some of my photos turn out slightly blurry. I have been trying to figure out how to improve it for a few months. Then I did the following experiments and believe that Sony A7II's AF is not accurate and inconsistent under certain conditions:
The experiment is as follows. Use the 55mm F/1.8 lens and set the camera at AF-S, aperture priority, center focus, and auto ISO. Try to use the AF function to lock the focus with aperture at F/1.8. Then try again at F/22. F/22 would take longer to focus, which one would think is fine.
Then please switch to AF-C. This will allows the camera to continuously focus on the subject. Try to focus with aperture at F/1.8 and F/22 again. You will find that the camera cannot lock the focus at F/22, or take much longer time to lock than AF-S. It also appears to me that the AF-C with F/22 does not lock the focus and it simply times out. This indicates that AF-S does not always give you the accurate focus you need.
I can demonstrate the AF problem consistently. Depending on the lighting condition, it shows as early as F/4.0. Mirrorless camera has come a long way. But I am very disappointed that the single most important function, auto focus, is so poor.

Great Camera

No doubt this is a great full frame camera in a small package! I have also the a6000 which to be honest has more shoot time on it than the a7ii. Something i just love about the super compact 6000 but this review is about the a7ii so i will leave only my thoughts on this model. I have shot canon and nikon and still have a d810 and love it, but carrying all the weight on my treks are wearing on me and my back and shoulders. The a7ii is fantastic with just a couple of gripes i have with it. One being the control dial on the back used for shutter speed adjustment is just too recessed and i wish it was metal and knurled like the exposure comp dial which feels great!
The only other thing i wish sony would do is let us program a button to toggle viewfinder and lcd panel. The recent firmware update from sony did finally give an option to set either the viewfinder or lcd or auto which is nice as it now turns the lcd off completely when i have it set to viewfinder only which helps to conserve battery but still needs a button to toggle back and fourth cause when you have it set to viewfinder only and want to review a shot or change a setting in the menu you will have to look through the viewfinder to see the settings unless you look through the menu through the viewfinder and find the setting to turn the lcd back on again which is time consuming as well as frustrating.
The reason i loved nikon is for the fantastic dynamic range and most of that comes from using sony sensors which i love. The kit lens that came with the a7ii was surprising me as it was really nice until just two days ago it out of the blue just started making clicking noises when the camera woke from sleep and would not autofocus or let me change f-stop and the lens was only a month old and i did try it on the a6000 body and it did the same thing so i know it was the lens and is now on its way to sony service center which i am a little disappointed from it being still relatively new but hopefully it will come back quick and be right? I am really looking forward to seeing the a7rii version as well as what sony does with the a6000 successor.

Great Camera So Far!

Purchased this camera from the South Coast Plaza location. The manager was really helpful and made the sale go smooth.
I would say i am a beginner to moderate skill level with these types of camera's, so i am in no way going to get into all kinds of advanced camera lingo yet. haha
It feels rock solid, lense interchange is fast and easy. As you can see from the photo, it is super crisp and colors appear to be great.
Can't wait get get a Zeiss Prime Lense and mess around with it more!

A game-changer

A great camera. Full frame premium sensor, five axis in-body stabilization... The electronic viewfinder is a wonder, and even better than the one I was used to with the A77 I already had. Forget about "chimping" at the LCD after each shot as other brands users will keep being used to: you only take the eye from the viewfinder when you want to. After all, the image you see there is already VERY close to the picture you will take (the camera is smart enough to take in account ISO-shutter-aperture settings, of course), and even if you want to review it you will be able to do that there in the viewfinder. This revolutionary approach changes your way of capturing what you see.
