Still not working....

I am SO jealous of all the great reviews for this product. We have been working with GE Customer Support for nearly 3 months now on either repairing or replacing our Opal icemaker. We purchased this in May and by August, it had stopped making ice. GE sent us another one (took nearly two months to arrive). This one (apparently a refurbished unit) didn't work either! We loved the wonderful Sonic-like ice during the FOUR MONTHS it actually worked.

I love appliances that make our life easier, this icemaker certainly qualifies! No more trips to buy nugget ice for my spoiled family. Quiet, great looking machine, I got the black and stainless steel. Amazingly compact for all it does. It makes plenty of ice for family, always full.

I love this ice maker! Makes the good Sonic ice and it makes it fast. Well worth every penny. I read a lot of the reviews & most complained that it's loud, but honestly, unless you sleep in the kitchen, I don't see why it's a problem. If you are on the fence about buying one, just DO IT you won't be disappointed. We'll worth every penny.

Not as good as last year.

My brother bought one last year and it is great. Works well. I bought one on his recommendation and it is the “new and improved “ model. But, it is not as good. I had to return the first 2. This is my third try. The main problem is the defrosting. It defrosts when it does not need to do so. I turned it off last night. Sat for 10 hours. I turned it on this morning and it started making ice. After it’s first dump, it started defrosting. It has been on 4 hours now and the bin is not half full and it has defrosted at least twice. Do not buy. I am going to give this unit a few more days then return. The ice is great! Taste great and is soft and easy to chew. I love the ice - hate the units inability to function. GE should “recall” them and fix the defrosting problem. Also, on defrost, the unit sometimes squeaks really loud. Like a baby crying. That loud!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

However, we truly hate to hear you’ve had trouble with your models, particular with defrosting and noise – we know this must be disappointing, especially when you’re on your third unit. This isn’t the great ownership experience we want for you, and we regret any inconvenience caused.
The Opal is designed to defrost as needed, and it may squeak when it does defrost as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. If you believe the unit is defrosting too frequently, you may want to check that the air vents aren’t blocked. If airflow is restricted, the machine won’t work as intended – making sure there is a minimum of 3” of clearance on the back and sides of the unit will help ensure proper airflow. You may also want to check that the side tank isn’t blocking one of the side vents (it should be in line with the front of the ice maker). We hope those tips help so you can enjoy your Opal properly, but if you’re unable to resolve this, you can contact Opal Support at 866-907-6718 or online at myopalservice.com.

Great Ice - Put it in Your Freezer

First, very good ice. Good soft porous texture that allows for your drink to seep in and soft to crunch so your dentist will be happy. Second, though the machine is designed to run 24/7, I found that by having an existing refrigerator with an ice maker/dispenser, I turned off the existing ice maker in my fridge and make ice once a week and pour this nugget ice in the bin. Works perfect for our family. A few tips I learned: by using the filtered water dispenser on the refrigerator to fill the Opal ice maker, I use filtered water without the need to buy the filter for the Opal. Once I make a hopper of ice, I put it in a plastic bag in the freezer while I'm making a second hopper of ice. Once that is ready, take out the plastic bag, drop it on the counter a few times and then pour it in your freezer ice bin (this keeps any ice that was still a bit wet in the Opal from sticking together). Also, when your done, you can wind up with an extra bag of ice in your freezer should you run low before making more. Overall, great product. Cleaned easy when it said to descale (but I didn't notice any buildup anywhere that I could see), runs quieter than our dishwasher and, like I said, we only use it for 10 or so hours a week. Love it!
