Very Disappointing

Our Opal unit has not worked properly for most of the nine months we have owned it. The unit constantly shut down hours after starting, and finally is not working at all. It is being replace by GE with a REFURBISHED unit.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Died within 7 months

Bought for my wife for Christmas and it started going into defrost mode constantly so I called for Tech Support on this site and they want me to produce a receipt even though it was purchased here. After 5 days they deleted my ticket and now I am on perpetual hold.

Wait for a better version

My friend had one and him/his family use it constantly. I decided to get one and wasted my time with two units. The first unit had a large screeching/grinding sounds (1.5 weeks after install) when the unit would first begin to make ice. The second unit would continuously cycle through making ice/defrosting but never made a nugget of ice

Can't recommend

Not even a year old and doesn't work. I have cleaned thoroughly and it still goes into defrost mode. When I called in, they suggested I use distilled water. So now I am expected to buy distilled water? What a joke. Hoping I can just return, but I'm sure its been too long.

Not recommended for daily use

My husband loves the ice from this machine but I absolutely hate this machine. If you use it daily 1) it cycles each time you get ice 2) it’s loud and 3) you have to clean it every two weeks. The cleanings take about an hour because of the repeated rinsing to make sure there’s no remaining bleach. A few days before the “cleaning” light comes on, the machine makes a loud grinding noise throughout the day. The noise stops after the cleaning but returns about two weeks later. I do not recommend this product if you want to use it daily.

Last less than a year!

I was very happy with this ice maker for literally 10 months. It started making weird niches then and about a month later made the worst sound so we had to stop using it. For this price, and the company name, I thought it would last a few years at least. I’m so disappointed!

These are junk.

It works great for the first 1.5 years... then starts squealing and making loud clunking noises out of nowhere right when it's out of warranty. There's a ton of videos on YouTube about this problem, and how to fix it... but every one of the GE Opal ice makers look completely different once opened up (mine was also completely different than any others when I opened it up), and mine was not able to be fixed due to the cooling design. Seems like the noise is a very common issue with these GE ice makers, and the manufacturer hasnt done much to fix it eventhough theres multiple variations and designs of the same appliance. I'd recommend staying away from the GE Opal ice maker and looking for an alternative like I'm about to do now.
