I absolutely love my Ice Maker! I use it everyday!! My only thing is I wish it was a litle quieter. It sounds like a dial up modem for yesteryears....

When your Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice builds up around the
mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic, and may take 30-45 minutes to complete. More frequent squeaking many indicate the need for a deep cleaning using white vinegar to remove internal mineral scale buildup. We also recommend checking to be sure you have a minimum of 4" of clearance on all sides, back and at the top for good air circulation. Also check to be sure any vents on the sides or back of the unit aren't blocked. Great Ice! 2 cons

I love the ice which is the reason I have purchased 3 Opal ice makers. The problem with this particular one is the cleaning light keeps flashing even after being cleaned. Also it makes more noise than my previous Opal machines.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great when it runs!

I love it when it’s running correctly. It’s been getting stuck in add water mode and I haven’t been able to get it out.

When it is past time to replace the filter, you may notice that your ice maker is no longer making ice. You may also notice the ADD WATER notification, even though you have water in the reservoir. If either of these things occurs, we recommend that you replace the scale inhibiting filter with a new one.

Noises and knocking

I love having nugget ice but the loud noise it makes when it is making ice is unbearable. Cleaning it doesn’t make a difference. If I still had the box it was shipped in I would return it for a refund! With the technology you have you should be able to build a machine that does not whine and start knocking like it is.

We’d like to address the issue you’re having with sound. We have information about what sounds you may hear from the Opal at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276. Among other sounds, we expect whirring, humming, etc.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal, to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. We also suggest ensuring you’re following the specific cleaning instructions in the manual, which start on page 7. The manual is linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.

It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow, so that the fan can move air about the unit. If you think the sound you’re hearing isn’t normal, we suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours, before reconnecting; this can often help with an issue.

On occasion, it makes this long whining noise that persists for several minutes. The noise is rather loud and when it happens in the morning, it typically wakes up everyone. It is very annoying!

Picked one up at good will still had the plastic protector on the cord 15 dollars.
Never used, soaked it in vinegar and used a cleaning tablet.
Then I had to purchase a side water container.
Run the water I use thru a britta. Also got a filter for it.
Runs like a champ love the ice.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great but needs work.

I would give it five stars because of the quality and amount of ice it makes except the design of the machine where the buttons are is poorly designed. Also the cleaning button constantly flashes. With the GE app there is no way reset it after descale it.
Ice is great, design needs improvement.

Great initially although loud. Need to clean very frequently and use filtered water always. Longevity is questionable as it has only lasted about a year or two before needing to be fixed.
