Too expensive
on March 24, 2026

Way too expensive to not work at all times. Does not regularly make ice without having to shift the appliance. So very disappointed with this product.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

LOUD!

I love the ice that it makes, but it is extremely loud. So loud it is hard to have a conversation in the same room as the ice maker.

Response from geappliances.comBy SarahGE_AppliancesMarch 26, 2026
We're glad to hear you love the ice, and we'd like to address the issue you're having with sound. We have information about what sounds you may hear on page 14 of the manual; that's linked here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. We also have an article discussing what sounds you may hear, linked here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276.

If the sound you're hearing doesn't seem to be normal, we recommend going through the full cleaning and descaling procedure described starting on page 7 of the manual; that can often help with an issue. We also suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting, to reset it.

We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss this with you further. Please respond at your earliest convenience, so we can assist.

Horrible machine
on March 26, 2026
Posted by: unhappycustomer757
I have bought two of these machines. Both of them have failed. The first one stopped making ice. The last one, the water pump motor died. I bought a new pump and replaced it myself. The machine worked for two more months then began to leak. It is now sitting on the floor of my garage. I will not buy another one.

Opal Ice 2.0 - noisier than expected
on March 27, 2026
Posted by: Opal U
[Employee of ge_appliances] The quality of the ice is good and as advertised.
Noise is the biggest complaint while making ice. It is noisier than expected for a device sitting on a countertop. Seems to be primarily compressor noise. Sometimes I can hear it in the next room. Capacity is reasonable and adequate for my general use - as expected.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Noise
on March 31, 2026

We have the GE Opal ice maker. Have loved it up till now. We clean it like the directions say and with the descaling powder recommended by GE. Now when it turns on to make ice it is loud and makes a very loud hum/howl noise. We have to turn it back off and not make ice as it is so loud and will not stop. Water tanks are full hose lines are clean and free of any crimps in them. We are at a loss with this as it is just over a year old for spending $500 on it!

We'd like to help out with the sounds you are noticing. We recommend performing a full clean and descale cycle for your unit. You can find instructions on pages 7 through 9 in the user manual here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf.

For the best performance, we recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.

We also recommend that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit. Furthermore, one of our agents will be reaching out to collect more information and offer assistance. Please respond at your earliest opportunity.

Great if you only need it until warranty expires

15 Days after the warranty expired it is broken. I came in and it was making a loud banging noise so I shut it off. Then it made this screeching noise and shut off. I'm afraid to use it now. Expensive paperweight.

We'd like to provide you with some information about the operation of your Opal ice maker. We recommend running a descale cycle to resolve any abnormal sounds, as well as ensure that there is at least 4" of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal. Disconnecting the unit from power for at least 3-4 hours can also help resolve the abnormal sounds. Please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, or X with your contact information, complete model/serial numbers, and a copy of this review so that we can review the information and get back with you quickly.

Would give 5 star if building water supply was an option. Other than that, great machine.
Don’t get the scoop holder-boo.

During normal operation, condensation forms on the bottom surface of the ice bin. This water will sometimes collect and drip down the lower front surfaces of the ice maker. The drip tray below the surface is designed to help collect this water.
