If You Purchased Early Models You’re Out Of Luck

I have two Opal ice makers (had one for home and one for my office which I brought home). I’ve used only distilled water, cleaned regularly with Opal cleaning kit, and have them set up properly. One unit has stopped working (suspect the ice bin switch) and I cannot get any parts or service help. The second unit is making a loud noise and I suspect it’s dying. My suggestion is to pay the extra money and get a professional unit like a Scotsman or Hoshizaki - these are “cute” toys but not real ice makers. Add to that GE bought Opal and as they say when that happens “GE, where great companies go to die”.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Finally Took the Leap

I have coveted this ice maker for some time. I LOVE chewable ice but I was hesitant to spend so much money on myself. Well, I’m worth it! Set up was quick and cleaning isn’t difficult or time consuming. There are 2 things that I wish were in the instruction manual. 1) there is no mention of the optional filter. I buy them from Amazon. I’ve used both the GE brand and the Glacier Bay brand. They seem to both last about 2 months. 2) I battled to set up the WiFi. I foolishly guessed I should use the Opal app but I eventually learned from reading a blog about something else that the Opal app is only for blue tooth. The correct app is called SmartHQ. The app is helpful as you can set a schedule and it tells you when the ice maker needs cleaning. I set mine up in my laundry room near the sink for ease of draining during cleaning, but you could easily use a bucket of it weren’t near a sink. It is a bit heavy to move. One thing I’m not clear on is the light, nothing in the manual describes the purpose for the light (off/dim/on) but I’ve read the blue light helps keep it clean. I have no idea if this is true or not??? As for noise, it really isn’t noisy. It makes some noise when making ice but I can’t hear it from the kitchen which is the room next door. Long story short, I love it.

We have loved it so far! My only complaint is I wish it would hold a colder temperature! I feel if you do t eat it right away it melts down? But my family love it so far!

the fact that the ice recycled when melted to make more ice is so amazing because it will just continue to make ice over and over till it is emptied but with the side tank you never have to worry unless you use ice for everything
