It's a good, useful product. The most negative thing about the Opal is they don't last long. We are now on our 4th in less than 3 years. Forget about having it worked on by a GE appliance repairman is your area. They won't touch it. It has only a 1 year warranty. If you have issues and callGE, they give you a number for Opal. The one we did have,just a tad over 1 year old, quit working last week. I filled out a form on their website and have yet to hear back. A lot, lot, lot of money for a product with such a short lifespan. Granted some folks get a longer lifespan use, and for them I'd say, you're the lucky ones.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great... While it lasts

The ice is great for all the ice lovers out there. But beware this thing is plagued with problems that eventually arise. Loud noises as parts quickly wear, leaks, weird sludge it makes, all right out of warranty, naturally. Only 1.5 years in before I have to tear the thing apart to replace parts.

It’s a great product only when it’s working for the short period but when it’s not working it’s trash! Barely worked for over a year, had to have the first one replaced. Second just out of warranty and won’t stop making a loud noise! They won’t sell you new parts for machine! Complete trash! No help. A 500 dollar product should last longer than a year or even over year and half. Ridiculous.

Received a defective machine and support won’t respond. Water just sits in the reservoir and won’t run through the machine. Doesn’t work. Save your money!

Not good long term

Loved this until the fan got really noisy after a couple months and then it completely took a dump after two years. Main pump/freezer unit leaks and dumps water all over the counter. Of course the warranty expired. Would cost more to fix than to buy a new one.

Loud screeching noise -- don't buy this machine

I never write reviews, but in this case I'm making an exception. I want to forewarn potential purchasers. I got an ice maker for my wife for Christmas and was really excited for the machine because my wife loves pebble ice. The ice this machine makes is really great pebble ice. The problem is that within two weeks of setting it up, carefully following instructions, the machine began to make the loud screeching noise that some of the reviews have referred to. The noise wouldn't go away even when I turned the machine off. I had to unplug it to get the noise to stop. The ice was so good I decided to give the machine another try, but not much later had the same thing happen. Within just a few weeks of setting up the machine, I had probably 5 or 6 incidents of the noise that in most cases wouldn't go away unless I unplugged the machine. And it's not just a small, annoying noise; it's a loud screeching/high pitched humming sound. I have no idea what causes the noise -- I'm not an engineer -- but this is to me definitely a design issue. It sound like maybe the machine internally creates a vacuum of some kind which makes the noise. Anyway, as good as the ice this machine makes, I would definitely urge you not to buy it. If it actually worked without the noise, it would be well worth it, but the noise makes it not tolerable. Really too bad.

So easy, and love it

My husband and I love this ice maker. So easy to set up and uses the melted water to create more ice so there’s never a mess on the countertop. We’ve been drinking so much more water and I couldn’t be happier!
