SONIC ice all the time!

My husband and I purchased this ice maker after using a family member's first generation machine several times during the holidays, family visits, etc. We like the water reservoir being on the side of this model and the more modernized appearance. As some other users have said, the cleaning process is a tad cumbersome, but not a deal breaker. The machine does make noise as others have disclosed. It is not obtrusive, but for on occasion as water flows through the drain tubes and again not a deal breaker. So far, we are very pleased with the purchase! It has been a hit!

Trust me - you NEED this ice maker - and you DEFINITELY need the side water filler (technical name:) - easy to set up - easy to operate - easy to refill the water filler - basically it just makes your life overall easier and waaaay better - it literally makes you keep hydrated all day long - and makes a mean cocktail at night!;)

Good Ice Maker

Setting the ice maker was straight forward. Add tsp of bleach and required cups of water and let the system flush and repeat with just water to clear out any residue chemical. I find that if you are near the sink for the initial sanitizing it makes it easier to flush out the liquid.
Now once sanitizing is complete, place the ice maker to the end state location. Fill the water reservoir (side of machine) with clean water. I use Reverse Osmosis (RO) water to produce clean tasting ice. I reckon this would cut down with any mineral buildup as well.
The ice maker will begin to make ice. You will hear the hum, buzz that any fridge makes while it is cooling. All is normal and you will forget it once you get used to it. It has Wifi connectivity which is great to control on/off and check progress. I personally do not use it much.
The ice is plenty quick for me. Next day I had a bin full of pellet ice. Great ice and any remaining melted ice will go back and be remade into ice.
In summary:

*Machine is imported and quality can be of concern when warranty, very limited 1 year expires
*Noisy if you are sensitive to humming and buzzing

Amazing Ice!

Purchased an Opal 2.0 Nugget ice maker for my wife as a Christmas present. She's always loved crunching ice at Sonic and, when I'd heard that GE had a machine for consumer/home use, I decided to buy one. In a word, she LOVES her new nugget ice maker!! I've been sourcing ice from the machine, as well, even though we have an in-door unit on our GE Monogram refrigerator/freezer. Frankly, I prefer the, smaller, "soft" ice nuggets in my morning orange juice. Although we haven't had our new ice maker very long, I'm very pleased with it so far. While it's not inexpensive, the quality is there and I'm betting I'll save some money this summer as my wife and I drive by Sonic rather than pulling in for a cup of soda and their chewable ice nuggets! One final point...the unit has nice LED lighting that looks fantastic reflecting off the ice and adds to the overall quality image of the appliance.
