You’re going to need more batteries

I bought this because my other 40v twin blade Greenwoks mower finally seized a motor. I like the single blade option, and though the self propelled is nice, you really have to use it all the time because the mower is just too heavy to push.
The motor is back wheel propelled which makes turning around much more difficult than a front wheel drive as you have to lift the back of the mower to make 90 degree turns instead of just tilting the front back with a simple push down on the handle, which is more natural.
If you opt to disengage the self propelled, you need to wait 2 seconds as the wheel is “locked” while in self propelled settings and takes a moment to disengage.
Also, it takes a while for the speed to resume back to full speed.
Now to the batteries. My mowing time is exactly 60 minutes. With my other mower, I could do it all with two 4 amp batteries. Not even close with this mower. I needed to buy 2 6 amp batteries where I use about 3 total (2 6 amp and most of a 4 amp) to mow it all now.
The original charger wouldn’t charge the 6 amp batteries, so I had to buy a new one.
Other than that, it is quoted and cuts better than the twin blade. I know there are better 21” mowers, but I wanted to stay with this as I have other 40v GW products and don’t want to manage other proprietary batteries.
Whatever you decide to get, make sure you build it around the batteries. Unfortunately with Greenworks, there are way too many battery types and configurations and nothing is really scalable. It’s also priced ok. Good for entry into the market and less than an hour of mow time.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Battery Life
on May 15, 2021

I just placed an order for the Pro 60V 21" Brushless Self Propelled Lawn Mower and after reading some of the reviews its apparent we have a long way to go on having tools operating on batteries. It appears battery technology is lacking and I should be prepare on returning the battery operated lawnmower and just stay with my gas driven type mower until such time we have better batteries. Will see what experience I will have with this product and write a follow up review.

Hello Big Dawg,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the run time of this battery when used in this lawn mower.
It is important to adjust your mowing techniques to make the most out of the battery life, but it goes without saying that that the harder the unit works, the quicker the battery drains.
Here are a few mowing tips to help achieve the optimal run time.
1) When cutting thick grass, reduce walking speed in order to allow for a more effective cut and a proper discharge of the clippings.
2) Only mow 1/3 of the total grass length at a time - no more. For a healthy lawn, always cut off one-third or less of the total length of the grass. The average lawn should be approximately 1 1/2 to 2” (3.8 to 5 cm) long during cool months, and between 2" to 3 1/4" (5 cm to 8.3 cm) long during hot months.
3) Mow when the grass is dry. As this is an electric unit, mowing wet/damp grass is a safety issue. However, ensuring the grass is dry will also help the grass cut cleanly and discharge appropriately. Wet/damp grass carries more weight and will mostly stick to the blade/motor shaft and will not appropriately discharge or cut easily.
4) Make sure the battery is cool before use. When the battery will not be in use, we suggest storing it indoors, in a cool dry area - away from direct sunlight. Leave the charger unplugged and the battery disconnected from the charger unless it needs charging.
We hope these tips will help! If not, we would be happy to investigate to see whether your run time would be considered average; please submit an email using the customer contact page on our website or give us a call at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS). All we ask that you have access to the unit so that we can complete troubleshooting with you and gather necessary unit information.

I wanted to avoid gasoline and electrical cords. It does a great job and runs much quieter than gas or electric mowers.

Love this Lawn Mower!!!

So excited to own a lawn mower that requires so little maintenance!!! My mower runs on two 4.0 batteries and I rarely even use one up. Definitely the best tool purchase I've made. I wish I would have had the forethought to realize that I would love the battery powered mower so much...that I would want additional tools that would ideally use the same batteries. I want to purchase a snow blower for the MN winters..but am having trouble finding one that uses the same batteries. That aside, the mower really is award winning....this review reflects the tool not the battery.

Mow with freedom

Now I can mow without gas, spark plugs, tune-ups, winter preparation and electric power cords. No matter how long it sits, it starts right up, without pulling any cords. The battery life is good for mowing the whole lawn. The mower is light in comparison to gas mowers and is self-propelled. This mower has made mowing a much easier task and has set me free from maintenance.

We're very pleased with our purchase of this mower. Our yard isn't huge so this worked perfectly. The battery lasts me around 30 mins or so. Much easier to maneuver than a gas powered one.
