Best Tax Software for the Money

As good or better than any of the tax software for sale. Rated as one or the top tax software programs as long as I can remember. I have tried the other major brands but always come back to H&R Block/Tax Cut. I have been using Deluxe with State H&R Block/Tax Cut for over ten years. No problems. Software walks you through each step. Once you finish the federal return, the state return process takes the federal data and overlays onto the state when possible then walks you through the rest. It is up to you to have the W-2s, mortgage interest, interest income, dividends payed and other documents handy when you use the software. Expect to spend several hours if you have a complex 1040 return with itemized deductions. I usually space it out over several days with 1-2 hours at a time. Remember to save after a major step and when you leave the program. Easy to go back and correct an entry if you want to update something. When done, best to take a break before filing. You have the option of electronic or paper filing. Software will alert you when you electronically filed/accepted and if there is a problem with the filing within 24 hours. You can back-up the file and returns and save as pdf files. There are a couple of minor quirks but nothing serious and I find easy to work with. i always get a refund better than I expected!
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to fix issues, Easy to prepare
Easy to input data, especially importing from financial institutions. We got excellent, prompt assistance last year when IRS caught a mistake in a previous return filed with H&R Block at no extra cost. Returns are saved in the H&R cloud so I don't have to worry about my computer crashing losing the data.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Easy to import
Can't file electronically for reasons beyond anyone associated with Block, it seems. I don't need data entry on E line 23a, but the program thinks I do. No prompts for state carry forward of capital losses, confusing method of adjusting cost basis on sales not reported on 1099B. At least 5 tech support chats (tax theory) made more difficult by inability to understand instructions and information going both ways - phone would be much quicker and accurate.
HRB has the best tax preparation software that I have ever used. It provides and easy and thorough step by step process. Help and explanations are available at ever step.
Pros: Easy to fix issues, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund
