I have used H&R Block software for years and have been very happy with it. This year (2017 taxes) I am very disappointed! Even though I entered the School District Tax withheld that was on my W-2, it didn't carry through to the State. Thus, I had a form IT/SD 2010 that said I owed the full tax liability! I can't fix it, the form does not allow that entry to be edited. Very upset!!! I trusted that when the software said that it transferred the information that I entered in my federal form to the state that it ACTUALLY did it...NOT!!!
I feel something in your discussion about Medical and Dental Expenses needs to be stated better - When filling out my State of Oregon Income Tax, something you wrote was imprecise. The screen read "Since you and/or Karen were age 64 or older, you may qualify for the special Oregon medical subtraction... "You can't subtract medical or dental expenses: Point #3 was "That have already been deducted elsewhere on your return." It should have read "That have already been deducted elsewhere on your Federal return." I'm emphasizing you should have said "Federal" return...
I have used this software for a lot of years. It is consistent and easy to use, most of the time. One improvement would be to allow scanned PDF documents be attached for E-filing. When you have to include extra documentation with your taxes, it is best to mail it all together. It would be much better to attach the needed PDF files and E-file. Also, the final instructions that print giving you filing instructions don't include instructions to include the needed special documents that you need (but were identified in your programs audit check). You also don't make it clear how to attach 1099 forms or W-2s (paper clip, staples etc.). Spell it out for folks.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Easy to import
