Long Time User - Very Good Software

I have been using H&R Block software for 25 years...since before it was H&R Block. It works well for me - it's a big time and money saver. My tax situation is not outrageously complicated, but there are nuances...blended family, multiple HSA accounts, etc. I always buy it early and get a discount for doing so. My only complaints are a) that it is actually next to impossible to actually get help answering specific tax questions unless you have a LOT of time to devote to that, and b) there is typically one area each tax year where the software basically says "read the IRS instructions"...which is completely worthless. This year for me, it was the section on Health Savings Accounts...there was little to no instruction in the software, and as usual, the IRS instructions are terrible and frustrating. I really think it's a REQUIREMENT for the software to ask all of those pertinent questions regarding HSAs so that you don't HAVE to go to the IRS instructions. That's the whole point. I would also like the software continue to ask more questions about nuances and tax deductions that MAY apply to me, so I could investigate those. I did have an update download fail this year, and the technical support to fix that (thru online chat) was very good...although it takes a lot of work to figure out where to find the chat function online. All in all, though, I really do think that the H&R Block tax software is very worth it for the money.

Cons: Hard to import documents

Sale of Inherited Stock Help

Have used this product for many years. Easy to use and appreciate it carrying data forward from year to year and import feature. I had a lot stock sales to enter this year. Two of the stock sales were for stock I inherited. There could have been a question and help with the sale of inherited stock to be sure it gets recorded as a sale of long term stock even when you have not owned the stock for more than one year.
Pros: Easy to import documents

We've been using this H&R block product for years and would never use another product. The program is easy to use but also very thorough and comprehensive. The more advanced version worked great for us when we had a rental property and several states to file. Our life is a little more simple now but we feel confident that this product leaves no stone unturned.

Spent 2 hours trying to get state program to load.

Have had good luck with HRBlock in the past, but this year the state program would not load. Read every FAQ and tried tons of different things. I finally contacted the chat line and spent 45 minutes waiting for a rep. The rep asked the same questions over and over and then would say "Did I solve your problem?" over and over. I finally got it across to her that my problem won't be solved until the State program loads. She must have left to talk to a supervisor as it took awhile. She then sent me a link to the State program for my state. The link worked and as it installed I got some kind of message about a repair to the original installation. So, the original file must have had problems (got from Amazon). I am a CPA and very tech savvy. I could have manually done my return much faster than spending good portion of a Saturday getting the program I purchased to work.
Cons: Time consuming
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Used H&R Block Software for Years

Every year, I purchase a copy of H*R Block's at-home software. It is extremely thorough, asks the right questions, and is relatively easy to use. For some users, the questions may be hard to understand, but the help feature will clear up any questions. One problem with filing the Colorado form. This year, I owed Colorado a small amount. The software did not print out the voucher used for payment. Instead, the instructions said to attach a check to the return, even though the voucher (that I printed from the Colorado Department of Revenue Web site) said specifically NOT to send in a paper return if you had already filed electronically (which I did). I am sure that not all Colorado users are aware of this error and will send in the wrong paperwork.
Pros: Easy to prepare

Switched from turbo tax 8 years ago and never turned back. Buy it every year and found it is the BEST out there. Never an issue. Needed it for an amended return and it worked perfect!!!!
