h&r block deluxe fed. and state

easy to use but it needs to have a way to compare ways to file to get the best refund or to lessen the burden of paying by looking at both state and federal combined......
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

Pricey but Works Well

Very good software. I have been using it for years. My only complaint is that the cost of adding the state tax software, and the extra fee for filing the state part, are a little high.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Fast

Better than figuring out the tax code by yourself

I have been using the H&R Block software for my taxes for several years now. As usual, it makes the process easier than trying to figure it out on your own. This year two things tripped me up that I think could have prevented if the software was a little more user friendly. I could not find a good place to provide feedback directly to H&R Block, so I will do it here. My major headache was entering my wife's self employment earnings. She was a secretary at a place that considered her an independent contractor and gave her a 1099-MISC. The software interview was confusing and I entered her earnings twice in different places. After realizing the mistake, it was not easy finding where to delete the extra entry. At one point it seemed like the software had it in there three times (based on refund/owe total). There was no good summary view to see how many entries there were. The other issue I had was the entry for 401k contributions. The software should provide better guidance to avoid entering pre-tax 401k contribution in the section where you would enter an individual 401k contribution.
Pros: Maximizes refund

Great job H&R Block

Even with the complex changes to Federal Tax structure, H&R Block software has helped us file year after year. Great software design and easy to use!

The state return needs some work

I duplex printed the MI state return. Page 1 of Schedule one did not print. Page 2 did. But that left the following pages out of order. Also the routing and account numbers did not print on the MI 1040 form. There was a separate page with routing on it that was not to go to state but it was printed on the back of page 2 of Form 4884. I had to print the forms individually and assemble the return. A disaster for uninformed persons. I tried to print the whole return several times. No good. Federal forms seemed to be OK but I electronically filed them.
Pros: Fast
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

E file problems

This program is inadequate for e filing. We were issued a federal ID number. This number was noted in our entries and was correctly entered. However, the program ignores this entry and requires us to choose some arbitrary 5 digit number for both taxpayers. This confuses the IRS resulting in a rejection of our return. We now have to mail a paper return for both federal and state. Unless you fix this problem, we find no reason to use your program in the future.
Pros: Easy to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I have used H&R Block tax software for more than a decade, back to when it was Taxcut. It is always accurate, up to date and easy to use whether you use the interview process or enter data directly into forms worksheets. Highly recommend.
