After spending hours preparing my return, I was prompted to save in .pdf format. This required installation of 3rd party software. The automated installation of this software failed and told me to "contact the manufacturer" (which one?) I will have to take my laptop to a printer somewhere to print my return, which probably means hours trying to install a printer driver so I can print on whatever printer I can get access to. I should be able to save a .pdf file on a USB stick and print in seconds anywhere.
Original filing software for Federal and 3 states was very smooth and efficient. However, I had to do an amended return due to corrected 1099-DIV from brokerage, which was a mess. The 1040X (amended return) has 3 columns for data (old amounts, new amounts, amount of change.) The software managed to get one column correct, other two were a mess. This should have been very simple. Software mess!
I really like the interface. Very easy and intuitive. Gave it the greatest review (10), then when printing, you made me install your PDF writer. I hate that. I own Adobe Pro and have it on my computer.
I have used HRB for many years. This year, upon the passing of my father-in-law, the handling of various accounts provided difficulties. The Block software was less than its usual "helpful" in getting me to the right places to "fill in" the required information; the "Help" column was useless, and the software actually locked up because it presumed a discrepancy between Federal and State numbers. I eventually solved the problem by filing only the Federal -- and then filing the State "by itself". Block -- please give the "unusual" situations the same attention you give to the "normal" filing.
