Functional, but difficult to see text on screen

It does a good job helping with preparing even slightly complex tax returns. It took about 70 minutes to go through the entire process, including e-filing. Some years ago, they added the ability to download from financial institutions, greatly improving ease of use. My biggest beef revolves around the user interface. Since it hasn't really changed for many years, the text is too small on modern monitors and very difficult to read. There are no controls for font size and it does not seem to respond to OS tricks to override this fixed-font-size behavior. Additionally, while the window size can be changed, the actual text area is also fixed. It's like downloading old software designed for Windows XP—terrible.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I have been using this program for many years and have been pleased with both the price and the ease of use.However the tax year 2025 with respect to the Interview answers to the questions were not clear and sometimes misleading. Additionally, I was advised that I would be penalized. I completed the form to explain my underpayment. Before completing I was advised I would need to correct said form. My attempt to correct said form was for nought ( I tried 4 times) i had to delete the form so I could file. I paid the penalty amount.
I would recommend this to a friend!

OK, but shows evidence of inadequate testing

I have two main complaints about this software:
1. If you were age 62 or older during the tax year, the "Accuracy Review" in the "Finish" step of the Federal filing process issues a "Data Verification" warning if you haven't reported any Social Security income. The software appears to allow you to delete the associated form if you attest that you received no Social Security income -- it provides a "Delete Form" button and confirmation dialog box -- but the warning persists even after the form has been deleted. Not everyone begins collecting Social Security retirement benefits at age 62. The software should stop issuing the warning after it's been acknowledged and addressed by the user.
2. The IRS issues Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers (IP PINs) to taxpayers to make online filing more secure. If the e-filed return doesn't include the correct IRS-assigned IP PIN, it will be rejected. The H&R Block software is aware of IRS-assigned IP PINs. Under FEDERAL > MISC > Where Do You Want To Go? is a list of 14 items (each with an associated "Go To" link to its right):

Installment Payment of Tax
Community Property Income
Third Party Designee
Request for Change in Language Preference
Alternative Media Preference
Driver's License or State-Issued ID

Amended Return (Form 1040-X)
Since 13 of the items are indented under "Miscellaneous Home", it's logical to assume that they're the 13 specific topics addressed by "Miscellaneous Home". If none of the listed topics applies, there's no apparent reason to click on any of the "Go To" links.
However, hidden under the "Go To" link next to "Miscellaneous Home" is a list labeled "Tell us if any of these special situations apply." followed by eight checkboxes. Some of the checkboxes address topics in the list shown above, but one is labeled "I received an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS for someone on my return." Unless this checkbox is checked, the software doesn't prompt you to enter your IP PIN, and without the correct IP PIN, the submitted return will be rejected.
Every item in the tax return that could cause the return to be rejected should be included in the main workflow; no such item should be buried somewhere that the user would only encounter by drilling down in a topic as broad as "Miscellaneous Home".
My Opinion:
Both of the issues described above suggest that the H&R Block tax software wasn't adequately tested before being deployed. It makes me wonder what other issues haven't yet been discovered.

Works Well Enough

I use this program every year. It seems to work well enough because I have never been audited. It is rather tedious however and asks so many questions which are unrelated to me that it tends to drive me crazy. I guess that is mostly the fault of our overly complicated tax system.
