We switched to H&R Block several years ago when we had problems running Turbo Tax on our Mac. One feature that I would really like to see is I want to be able to click on a number and have the software show me where it comes from or how it was calculated.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
Very easy to install and use software. I have been buying the Deluxe package with 5 free Federal and 1 State e-filing. Works great for my family. Used H&R Block for e-filing about as long as e-filing has been available. Great support also, if needed.
I am extremely disappointed that the software would not allow me to make my payment date for taxes to July 15, 2020 even though both the State and the Fed extended to that date. It forced me to choose a date on or before April 15, 2020. In times like these those extra 3 months would have helped.
I understand why H&R Block devotes most of their attention to providing a good federal package, and I've liked using it for many years. But the state package, at least for Wisconsin, seems superficial and does not match the federal standard. Wisconsin is very cool towards tax-free investments, with only a few exclusions carrying over from federal. The H&R Block Wisconsin package does not leave you with any confidence about how this confusing topic is handled. Also, this is the first year that I've paid extra for electronic filing at the state level. The process seemed unnecessarily awkward, though it apparently worked out OK. Downloading H&R Block's own PDF package was slow, and seemingly unnecessary, since I've got Adobe Acrobat already. Then, there was ambiguity about whether my federal information would automatically be appended to the Wisconsin return. Guess it was.
