H&R Block has an interface that is not user friendly, lacking the clarifications and guidance seen in Intuit, Freedom Tax, and other tax products. The additional cost for state software and e-filing quickly adds up to what you’d pay a CPA, while simultaneously taking more of your time. I do not recommend this product, especially if you live in IL.
I moved last year and chose H&R Block based on its ability to accommodate tax filing in multiple states. This software was unable to meet identity verification for first-time filers in IL, after I was already charged additional state tax software and e-filing for GA. Instead, I was able to file my IL taxes for free through the state’s own website/portal, which also had better explanations.
My main gripe is this software accomplished nothing over its competitors, while charging more for those services at all junctures and somehow still being less clear and more cumbersome than any other tax service.
I have used H&R block software for the past few years to do my taxes and found it to be a smooth experience. This year I found that I had a few questions that required a little bit of research outside of what was offered in the software (for a deeper explanation), which is why I gave the software 4 stars.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
The Wisconsin state tax module INCORRECTLY calculated the Credit for Net Tax Paid to Another State on Schedule OS. It took me hours to figure what was wrong and to come up with a workaround, which included completing Schedule OS manually.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
Asks for information without adequate explanations

There are too many instances during the interviews, especially the state portions, where the tax payer is asked to enter information without an adequate explanation. Tax preparation software is purchased so that the taxpayer does not have to go through the tax code to understand what needs to be entered. If that responsibility is shifted back to the tax payer, then why do we need to pay for your tax software??
I have used H&R Block Tax Software for twenty years and have never had one bit of trouble with the IRS and have always received a return. I would highly recommend it (and have) to anyone who wishes to file their federal and state taxes in a smooth, methodical and efficient manner. Two thumbs up.
I've been using H&R Block software since before they even had it (when it was called 'Tax-Cut'. This was in the early '90's! It's so easy to use, easy to follow, and has great results. It even has access to last year's return so you don't have to look anything up to file. Great product!
