I switched to H&R Block tax software several years ago and have been very happy with the quality of the program and the ease of preparing our taxes. Over more than a half dozen years of filings, I have not had any questions from the IRS and everything has gone smoothly. I especially like the final self audit the program does to catch any obvious errors or notify the user of any points that might trigger an audit. I plan to stick with the H&R Block software for the foreseeable future.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
H&R Block software made our taxes extremely easy, even with a few complicated situations. And since the purchase comes with five free e-filings, we were also able to help two of our young adult children file for the first time this year at no extra cost.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
This software has numerous self help guides for all levels of experience. I love the automatic population of historic information as well as the links to online databases for various financial institutions. I also appreciate the verification steps just before submission. And having the audit aid guarantee gives me confidence to submit without worry... for the past ten years at least! Thanks H&R.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
1st time using H and R block Software. Although sufficient, they required attention to several details that were stated as be incorrect and would not proceed to the filing until it was falsely corrected. For example, 1099 interest was correctly showing on my 1099 as 0.02. The software refused to accept this and would not let me proceed until I entered $1. They also had issues with the payer (as paid by brokerage companies) of interest and dividends. They wanted the adjusted gross income for 2018. This may be a new authentication requirement for the IRS, but was another hurdle that I had not had with Turbo tax. Lastly, Turbo Tax would ask specific probing questions throughout the entry process to gain additional deductions. H and R block simply had a questionnaire form, but did not delve deeper into possible additional deductions. I believe we will return to Turbo Tax next year.
Overall I think the program is good. I had some strange surprises at the end of the program for the state of Wisconsin because I had salt limitations the previous year so my WI refund wasn’t taxable - but I didn’t find that out until Accuracy Review at the end of the program. This should be addressed when you are discussing your tax refund as income at the beginning. Also, I needed to attach a PDF for my WI Historic Tax Credit - the program doesn’t tell you it will allow you to attach during you e-filing, so I was frantically searching for how to attach a PDF - with little help from the Search engine. When you type your search it automatically shows “how to attach PDF” but it doesn’t tell you that you will be allowed to do this while you are e-filing! Also really bizarre - I didn’t know that the WI HIstoric Tax Credit was a business credit so I had a heck of a time tracking it down - When I tried to search for the forms I couldn’t find either Wisconsin Form “Schedule HR” or “Schedule CR”. They then magically appeared after I tracked through the program and discovered the credit on my own. Also, I would expect more help hours available for software support in the week before filing deadline. When I did call for help first thing this morning - 7:10 am, I was told “due to unusually high call volume we can not accept your call at this time.” This is lame to say the least!!!
H&R Block Deluxe software is a great tax software. The program guide you step by step until you finish. You do not need to know anything about taxes. Been using it every year for over ten years.
