E-File Problems

I had been pleased with HRB software until doing my 2025 returns. Federal E-Filed OK. But ran into problems with MN state return. First: A CATCH 22! On the federal background information worksheet, section 1, C/O information. The federal return REQUIRES and entry here. My MN return WILL NOT PERMIT an entry here. I was able to work around this and clear this state E-File barrier. Second: Deceased spouse. My spouse passed away in 2025. Because of this I cannot E-File my MN state return. Really???
Pros: Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare

Pensions not taxed by Hawaii

In the Hawaii tax returns, line 13 should automatically included when you input the pension amount from the federal tax 5b worksheet when ever both are shown as retired for their occupations. Net is zero for Hawaii tax purposes when the form is calculated.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming

It is more difficult to work with this than with Turbo Tax. The good thing is that it doesn't require windows 11.

Solid and helpful as always

H&R Block tax software is consistently good. It has the latest updates, guides one through the process well, and does a good accuracy check at the end to catch the small errors I inevitably make. It work beautifully with the previous year filing, bringing over information to the new one. One suggestion from this year's experience - if one downloads a 1099 twice one needs to be careful to delete one. If one had a 1099 of some type last year, then downloads again the current year, one needs to delete the empty duplicate (the not-downloaded one). Not a serious problem. It also download ALL 1099s association with a particular account number (div, int, B, etc.). This is a big plus, but one does need to be careful not to download one twice without knowing it. Overall, highly recommended.

I like the ease of the program, but my return was declined twice because the program did not have my type in my ID pin. Please add this option so my and others taxes go through the first time.

Works mostly okay. More bugs than usual this year.

That the software touted a feature that AI would be able to answer a lot of questions for a customer, only for customers to discover that the AI couldn’t answer many of the questions posed to it was, unfortunately, extremely sub-par.
Customers who select the “Yes, we had digital asset activities” only to have the software *not* ask for 1099-DA or other forms, nor offer entry fields related to those crypto digital assets is a pretty terrible experience.
The “Error Checking” page near at the end asked for 3ea things to be reviewed (of which *none* had errors in them), then insisted and persisted through multiple tries, and then suddenly let the customer past, as if it was a humorless and mean and cruel and pointless gauntlet. That was the worst we’ve seen this software do (in 26+ years of running this software).
That the software didn’t insert (or flag to insert until the very, very, very end of the process) a missing SSN on a 1099-R form was pretty hideous. By the way, after touching up that form, the software then tried to get us to route *again* through the “Error Checking” page that had forced the pointless gauntlet time waster and angst creator just a few minutes prior. Imagine, after multiple times of experiencing troubles with that feature, being asked to route *again* through that prankster page. There are some good features on this software, though this was possibly the worst experience with it yet, ever, to date.
After everything and all of the frustration, the software did work. If there was one request that we could make, it would be to *PLEASE* test and QA/QC this software package better before releasing any future versions.
