I thought the program worked well this year, although it didn’t carry the correct form over from 2919 return for home office deduction - which resulted in a requirement to fix the form, which I did. Other than that it was easy to use, but it could be even more user friendly if there was a reference to the 1040 line applicable to the question for specific earnings or deductions.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
Easy to use, don't even have to go to the store to pick-up. I have spent well over twice the price to have someone to do for me and had to wait a few days. It pretty well does it for you.
It works, but the help it provides is weak. If you are looking at a certain value on a tax form that the software prepared, and want to determine where that value came from, it's usually pretty hard to trace back. The "take me to" help usually doesn't help when you're trying to determine where to find the questions related to something arcane. Getting telephone help or online chat help requires long waits. Since I've been doing my own taxes for over 50 years, I'm familiar with the basics, but sometimes I face something new to me. Someone new to preparing tax returns is likely to get confused.
I have found H&R Block Deluxe 2020 Software very logical, organized, easy-to-use and relevant for handing all of my tax issues. Based on my albeit vague knowledge of the tax laws, it seems accurate, and it using it has never led to any problems with the IRS. I have used this software ever since it started out as 'Taxcut" in the mid-90s, and it seems that ever year, the improve it a bit.
The one real con: I would have given it a 5-star rating except for one annoying and somewhat misleading sales tactic they employ in the software. They continually try to "up-sell" to the Premium version of the software whether you need it or not, and they do it in a sleazy way by presenting the "Upgrade to Premium" option as a big, brightly colored button, while presenting the "No Thanks" option as light gray text against a plain background. If you can accept the fact that they engage in this borderline deceptive practice, then use the software. It will serve you well.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
The final tax calculations seem fine. However, this has been an unnecessarily painful process this year. List of problems: 1)Didn't interface probably with Schwab, 2) uses IE rather than more secure Edge as browser interface, 3) Instructions for filing state taxes said to attach wrong page of Federal return, and 4) even though option to pay state through online system was identified, the wrong address was given for mailing a return without an enclosed payment. On the IE issue:"Is Internet Explorer (IE) a browser? According to Microsoft, no. Today, it's a 'compatibility solution' for enterprise customers to deal with legacy sites that should be updated for modern browsers. "
