I’ve used this for several years and found it more confusing than past years. Perhaps it is me but I probably won’t use it next year. Too confusing to wade through it.
I've been using H&R Block tax software for several years now. I like how thorough it is and how it holds your hand through the entire tax preparation and filing process. It finds things that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. Also, the accuracy review at the end gives you an added measure of confidence that your taxes were done correctly, and nothing was overlooked. The only area where I wish things were a little better has to do with the lack of detailed instructions on some of the input screens. I sometimes wonder if I'm interpreting things correctly. I know H&R Block has a support number I can call to ask questions, but that seems to be a bit of an inconvenience when they could have just as well included the detailed instructions in the software. I always manage to eventually work my way through things on my own, though.
I was doing a return for my deceased mother in law. It populated a form, form 1310, WHICH I DID NOT NEED. This was going to prevent me from e-filing. I had to dig into the IRS brochure regarding form 1310 and the IRS rules for submitting a return for a deceased person to determine I didn't need that form. Once I deleted it, I was able to e-file. I don't know why this error occurred but if I hadn't done a lot of extra work, I would have followed the programs instructions to send in a paper return with a form not needed. I have no idea what that would have caused the IRS to do.
It then told me that I needed to review a 1099-B from VANGUAR. I assume it meant "VANGUARD". Only problem - there was no 1099-B, or any other 1099, from Vanguard. Don't know what was going on here.
I generally (past years) have liked this program but this year it was buggy. Not sure I would recommend it given this. These errors made tax preparation harder and more complicated than it needed to be. The last thing you need are mistakes with the IRS.
The product this year did not have final worksheet to determine taxable social security until February 17, even though it had not changed from last year. This prevented e-file until it was finalized. There is an error of omission in the Nebraska program concerning decrease in income for taxable social security. First reported a month ago, it still had not been corrected by Feb 17.It does not maximize refund. I have recommended this product from the start. It also did not import some of my documents from last year's return.
We had to wait till February 17th to file. Awaiting for Social Security worksheet to be updated. All other tax programs did NOT have this hiccup! Will use Turbo tax program next year!
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
