Was able to manage and complete my return. However, when I tried to download it it gave me the wrong code that didn't match my computer and it wouldn't let me change it. I called, it took a while, but the agent finally straightened it out. The go to function was a bit cumbersome. The contact chat function was insufficient. I ended up having to call the number and had to go through several people to find resolution. The deduction pro was incomplete and it kept losing the cursor to navigate up and down the list. It was difficult to switch from one category to another.
During the accuracy check it kept claiming that I needed to go back to a 1099 R form and add an entry into line 16.0 ST distribution. The 1099 R had no information in this box and the program accepted that on two other 1099's. This would not allow me to efile my state return.
I am a long time user of this software, over many years. It’s great if there is nothing out of the ordinary. But this time I needed to include an external personal PDF with my exile return. Nothing in the instructions or help file for doing that so I called the software support line shown on the product screen. After 45 minutes and getting passed along to three people who had to pass me to someone else I finally got to talk to a lady who told me “oh yeah, you can do that”. She was adamant and told me exact instructions on how that would work and what the screen would show. I got off the phone and went into the program to send off my rifle and PDF. Unfortunately what she told me would occur with that process did NOT. Now I have sent the return and it was accepted by the IRS but without the needed PDF that will get everything handled with the IRS. So now I’m stuck. No way to submit the file now. This is really going to cause me further issues and problems. NOT GOOD. Support person gave me lousy information.
I have been using this product for a while, it's easily available and I like the fact I can download my stock transaction and that the software will fill out all the required forms
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
I've used the H&R Block federal/state tax software for many years and have been satisfied with it. The flow of the interview is straightforward, and it's well-suited for my tax situation. The same is true for the 2021 version except for an apparent defect in the state e-filing process. I'll describe it here, hoping the software folks will take a serious look at it. I have four 1099-R forms. The all have a field (box 16) called "State distribution". In 3 of the 4 forms, that field is blank; one form fills it in. During the interview, I filled in all the fields from each of the forms, leaving the field for box 16 blank for 3 of the 4 forms. After input from each of the federal/state forms is completed, there is an accuracy review. Neither review found any issues. Next I went through the e-file process for federal/state, which involves supplying account numbers for direct deposit. First, I provided the account numbers for federal e-file, and there was no problem. Then I provided account numbers for state e-file and clicked Next. A screen appeared indicating issues with the accuracy review appeared. There were 2 issues. Both were because box 16 for the 1099-R form was not filled in. (Strangely, one of the three forms with blank in box 16 was NOT and issue.) This should not be an error; <blank> is a valid value, as that is what is on the 1099-R sent by the provider (and it wasn't an error in past years). After hours of calling, waiting, calling, waiting, calling. We figured out that filling that field with the taxable amount from line 2 of the form circumvents the problem. I don't know if there will be a fix for the problem, but the circumvention should be documented. While getting past this problem was frustrating, I will use the product again next year.
