I've been using this product for about 10 years and never had a problem. It's easy to go through the questions and looking at only the sections that pertains to my circumstances. It does all the math and even keeps track of capital gain losses from prior years. Also keeps track of nondeductible IRA distributions. I'm in my late 70s and having mandatory IRA distributions. Never a problem. I probably only spent a few hours total to do the return and submit electronically. The refund is always in my checking account in a few weeks - sometimes as little as 10 days. Nice! I don't use the import documents since I only get 2 forms of the 1099Rs with all the numbers I need to prepare the return.
This is the 3rd year that I've used the H&R Block tax software. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 is that it caused me a lot more work because of the IRA Distribution doesn't show on the 1040 as an IRA Distribution but is combined with other income on the Pension line. That caused me many hour of time over several days trying to determine if I'd made an input error or if the program had a bug. I had 3 chat sessions and no one seemed to understand why it wasn't on the proper line of the 1040. I finally solved the riddle myself after I check the total income which was correct but not put on what I believe to be the right line of the 1040.
Otherwise their software is outstanding ... but I still can't understand why they have a section to enter IRA information and then don't put it in its proper place on the IRS's form.
The reason I didn't rate the software's cost an excellent rating is that I think the charge to e-file the state is way too high! If the preparation of one state return is included then that should be included in the package and not an add-on!
Seems to do a good job of capturing data from the return I completed last year. Does a good job of anticipating and prompting for actions or inputs that I'm likely to have. Is weak on explaining some topics. For example, it'll ask about other situations or taxes that might apply, but it doesn't define or explain many of them; having a a quick paragraph about those topics with a link to a federal or state instruction would be helpful at times. Also, you need to be careful when selecting input from a drop down box; if select an item on the list but then happen to touch the scroll wheel before clicking on a different input field, the input will change.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
