Th Arizona software is frustrating and leads to mistakes: (1) Government pension exclusion is limited to $2500. Instructions say to enter pension amount. This is then changed to 3191, which is $691 too high. (2) For Railroad Retirement, instructions say to enter RRR benefits but do not say that Tier 1 (Social Sec. Equiv.) benefits are already included, which leads to incorrect entry. (3) Instructions say to enter nonrefundable tax credit to delete deduction. But this does NOT enable the credit, which can lead to missing the credit. (4) If the credit is entered, the deduction may not be deleted, leading to another error.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
Cannot file. got an error, corrected it and re-submitted. Same error and it is correct. Went to chat and bot asked for rejection code. Typed in rejection code exactly as listed. chat bot said "no such code". I'll pay someone next year...
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
Spent a lot of time filing our my form only to have it repeatedly rejected by the IRS at e-file due to some import error. In the end had to redo the whole thing in order to remove the error and successfully submit.
Been using H&R for many years now and it walks me through my 1040 long form and then at the end finds where I made errors and helps me to correct them (this year 5!). I am very pleased with the product and the price.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
I've been with the H&R Block tax program over 2 decades. Thanks to the tax code, I've seen complexity increase over the years. I'm thankful for the program to smooth the way to get an onerous task out of the way.
Every year I discover bugs in the software which precludes me from e-filing or worse filing the needed documents. It's becoming tiresome to get the "well you can paper file" GEE - I KNOW that! Now I'll have to wait WEEKS for the refund. After 10+ years, H+R & I will be parting company. H&R Block defaults that I "retained an interest in donation" when this was absolutely not the case - if over-ridden, again no e-file. AGI prior year was correct (IRS transcript) again, precluded from E-filing.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
I have used HR Block/Kiplinger for decades and believe it still the best value and easiest to use. I prepare about 4-5 returns annually for my immediate family.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
