I have used H&R Block for several years now and find that it does a great job of preparing my taxes. I find that the cost is well below average for most tax packages, since it includes the fees for filing the Federal forms.
The process of completing data entry was as good as in past years. Have had a terrible time filing the Fed and State returns which were rejected twice!!! due to H&R Block software connectivity with the IRS. Notice of the second rejection was not received for 11 days after filing - Inexcusable.
Second, the instruction for finding software updates is to use Tools. Where is that? Oh, you indicate you want to create a new return. Then you find access to software updates and install them. Finally you choose to go back to the return you are filing (or choose create a new one). I never expected to ever rate H&R Block so low. I have used it annually for more than a decade.
Have used TurboTax for years and have had some issues with it. When I saw the price this year I felt enough was enough and decided to try H & R Block. The software was easy to use and straightforward for my return, and I found it was clean, i.e., not buggy. It exceeded my expectations—and at a very reasonable price.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
HRB fills the basic need but misses opportunities to improve year to year. For example, HRB doesn't import all the data from last years return that it could/ should, eg., account numbers, drivers license info and other data that is needed but doesn't (usually) change from one year to the next.
