Tax software simplifies completing tax returns

This software helped me complete my federal and state tax returns within one evening. Everything was pretty straight forward and easy to understand.
As far as improvements, I’d suggest they question the person using software if they would like to fill out the Itemized Deduction section, because some like me know they won’t have enough to itemize and prefer to bypass the time consuming part of filling out that section. Give a choice to Skip and take standard deduction.
Also, under Adjustments, it says Let’s start on your HSA. It says If you and name (spouse) had HSA’s click Self first. Need to clarify this section as I was the only one with HSA account.
Also, in same HSA section it says What type of plan did you have and it’s confusing what to choose for each month when you do NOT have a high deductible plan for any of the months, but yet you have HSA acoount from several years before when you had the high deductible plan years ago. I had a Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO plan, but it wasn’t high deductible. This section needs simplified as to what needs to be selected as Family Plan or No Plan. It’s almost like the software assumes you have a high deductible since you have an HSA account, but that’s not always the case.
Other than those few things it was very good software for tax returns.

This software needs a section in Pensions where you can submit a foreign pension such as one from the United Kingdom that has no paper work (1099 R) etc. The pension section is in keeping with IRS reg's

The tax preparation process is generally smooth, but I dislike the fact that they charge you money to e-file your state taxes. I always file the state on paper as a result.

I have used H&R Block's Deluxe and State software for several years now and will continue to do so. I'd definitely recommend it to others since it's informative and easy to understand going forward with your return. When it's finished and you're ready to submit your return to federal and/or state, you get complete and detailed information however you wish to submit your returns. Afterwards you are kept aware as to whether the returns were accepted or not.Excellent.

Update function fails constantly. State would not install citing not paid for and asking for more money (more than I had paid for the dual package!). And, lastly, the state calculation was off. I ultimately file my taxes for free on the State website and use the software as a double check. The state gave me $5 more than the software. I had already submitted my Federal. A tax friend will now be double checking both returns after tax season as a favor to verify the math...now that it is suspect.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Some frustrating problems

Federal efile blocked by "Unrecognized Activation Code Error." Customer Service solved by assigning new activatioin code.
Longstanding problem on NJ return with respect to Trust Income, which must be reported as "Other Income". But it is carried over from the federal return in other locations, causing double-counting of this income, which can only be corrected by overriding the carryover amounts. The overrides prevent e-filing and necessitate inconvenient ppaper filing.
