I was used the main competitor for years. After moving to a state with income tax I moved to H&R Block Deluxe version. I was surprised to find the interface much easier to navigate and the guided input to be superior to what I'd used in the past. I just filed my 4th year with product an I'm completely satisfied. In my experience its easier to use, I file fed and state in one click and its cheaper. It's just me but I buy the program and load it on my computer instead of using the online version.
As always this IRS tool makes my work much easier but this year I had particular trouble with the section on Partnerships and foreign taxes paid. After much hair pulling and nail biting when i could not get my data to fit and comply i finally noticed that I did not need to report the foreign income and taxes separately if also listed on my 1099-R. A little better heads up on this would have saved me hours of grief.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
If you take the Fed Standard deduction, there are items on the Fed forms not needed. But, some of these are needed for the State. They should be on the State forms to fill in, or be shown on them during the fill in period, so that you can skip doing it on the Federal one.
