(1) Interview process could be improved. I didn't see a question such as "Did you receive a state refund last year". Only a question if i received a 1099-G (which I did not..), so the process missed this part of my income. (2) When finishing, when there is a data verification problem, the software does not link you to the location of the problem, and certainly not the problematic part of the interview. (3) When doing an Amended Return, the software awkwardly causes the user to fill in the entire data column from the original return and provides not guidance on where that data is located (it's not often obvious). This data should AUTO-FILL as it comes from the return which is being edited.. There's no excuse for this..
I’ve been using HRB for several years. This year I only gave four stars as compared to the five in prior years.
First: I order the Deluxe federal and state. For some of the family, no state is required. I check the interview prompt to skip state, but when done the federal software goes to state page one. Second: One of my nieces has to use an IRS provided ID PIN. The interview never brings this question up. I found through the help menu. Third: I wanted to estimate the impact of capital gains and losses. Entered on that menu guesstimates for two brokerage accounts. When 1099’s came in I edited both with the correct figures. The result was that the total on the 1040 for that line appeared incorrect to me. I verified the interview prompts were answered correctly. I than went to forms and brought up the supporting documents. Both the estimated and the 1099 figures were accumulated. I deleted all worksheets and reentered the 1099’s. That worked but that definitely needs to be corrected.
I started doing my tax preparation with H & R BLOCK until now, it’s easy to follow instructions and you are guided until you finish your tax return. I am very satisfied! Thanks Frank
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Been using this software for many years. It's clunky, doesn't handle Quicken import very smoothly, but it gets the job done at a reasonable price ... until this year. Got through the whole process, and tried to eFile Federal and state (NY). The federal went through fine, but the state was rejected. It said to follow the instructions to correct the problem, but there were no instructions, just an indecipherable error code.
I suspect the problem was that last year, when my return was especially complex, I gave up on the software and went to a professional accountant. I had a partially done file from last year left on my computer, and I imported from it, thinking I would just get the personal data (names, address, etc.). But it also pulled in the Fed & state AGI from this incomplete return. Of course, these previous-year figures are needed to efile. I was able to correct the federal number, but it wouldn't let me override the state. As a result, I'm forced to paper-file the state return.
HRBlock is very easy to use. Just answer the questions. I’ve been using it for years & I always get money back. The program remembers much of your information from the previous year & you can just fill in the new numbers. That way it saves you a lot of time. I even did my friend’s return in under an hour!
Have used your software for years but this year I was unable to download my information from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Seems that the problem was in your system. I finally gave up after several weeks and had to load it manually.
