Began by downloading “last year’s info.” But said I’m married (widowed for 12 years). When I corrected that, it insisted I’m the one who died and erased my info.

I dealt with investment tax reports for the first time for 2023. The way that this program displayed what was entered automatically was difficult to find since it was not displayed. If a default could be set displaying all info captured from these reports I would not have tried to enter part of it manually (only to find it already entered later.) Otherwise most information entered automatically.
Cons: Hard to import documents

I have only used H&R Tax Products and 2023 was the first year I had an issue. First with the handling of some small investment tax credit, the product did provide a warning that it does not handle this transaction well . And then I was unable to file electronically with the IRS. This may have been an IRS issue but I could not obtain an explanation of the rejection code. Oh well paper filing had to be done.
Pros: Easy to prepare

We've used this software for years and continue to appreciate how cleanly it lets us build our tax returns, either via the comprehensive interview process (for federal and state) or going directly to the actual tax forms underneath sometimes (to check or things or do direct entry). The audit/review steps are also very helpful. This year had a chance to see how Turbo works, while helping a relative with their taxes, and it is a lot glitchier than H&R Blocks software.
Pros: Easy to prepare

Deadline filers were rewarded thus year with an 18-hour failure of a system that should have been hardened with more redundancy and high-availability than obviously exists. I was filing for our daughters and went as far as having the one who owed set up a Direct File account that we almost had to use. It's TurboTax next year, which is a shame after a decades-long relationship with TaxCut and Block. Where else has Block cut corners that are accidents waiting to happen?
